MARSHALL, MINN. -- Southwest Minnesota State University head wrestling coach Jesse Nelson announced that former University of Minnesota wrestler Jake Avre has been hired as his new assistant coach on Tuesday. Avre will replace John Koons, who left the program earlier this summer.
"I am very excited to get Jake to join SMSU wrestling," Nelson said.
"His experience will help us tremendously. Jake is also going to be
great in the [wrestling] room and is a great technician."
Avre competed on the 2002 Minnesota Golden Gophers Big Ten and National
Championship team and placed in numerous open meets as a member of the
Gophers. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a
bachelor¹s degree in business and marketing education.
As a coach, Avre has spent three years at the high school level,
working with the programs at St. Thomas Academy, Centennial High School
and Forest Lake High School in Minnesota, where he has had seven state
tournament entrants, two placewinners and one state champion. He has
also been a J Robinson counselor during the past eight years.
