No. 5 Vikings start NSIC season with win

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana won all but one match to open its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual season with a 31-3 win over U-Mary Friday night.

Augustana improves to 9-1 (1-0 NSIC); U-Mary falls to 0-3 (0-3 NSIC).

The Vikings won the first nine bouts and suffered their only loss in the heavyweight tilt.

Alex Burghardt’s 3-2 win over Hunter Menendez christened the dual, and Jason Jeremiason quickly followed by pinning Kyle Larson in four minutes.

Chism Fink (141), Nate Herda (149), Marcus Edgington (157) and Matt Morris (165) stretched the Augustana advantage to 21-0 with wins by decision.

At 174 pounds, Carl Serck handed John DeVito a 13-5 loss by major decision.

Jayd Docken and Sean Derry earned wins by major decision in their ensuing contests at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, to push the Vikings’ lead to 31-0

The Marauders charted their lone win at heavyweight when Martin Patron snuck in a 3-0 victory over Mike Roberts.

Augustana has now won its past five duals.

The Vikings travel to No. 1 St. Cloud State and No. 17 Minnesota State next Friday and Saturday for two conference duals.
