FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team will head west to take on a pair of Pac-12 foes this weekend. The Bison will wrestle Boise State (1-7) Friday, Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. Central and then head to No. 17 Oregon State (5-2) Sunday, Jan. 22 for a 4 p.m. dual. The Bison (4-4) are coming off a sixth place finish at the Virginia Duals.

Series history
The Bison are 2-0 against Boise State, including a 25-22 upset of the No. 6 Broncos in 2010. The only other meeting came during the 1976-77 season, a 41-3 Bison victory. NDSU is 0-2 against Oregon State. The Bison were shut out by the No. 21 Beavers in December 2009, 42-0, and lost 29-11 in February 2007.

Scouting the Broncos
Boise State comes into the weekend with a 1-7 record, including a 19-18 loss to the WWC’s Utah Valley last Thursday. The Broncos have two wrestlers ranked in the InterMat top 20 – George Ivanov is No. 16 at 157 pounds and Jake Swartz is No. 9 at 184 pounds. Head coach Greg Randall is in his ninth year at the helm of the program.

Scouting the Beavers
Oregon State’s dual with NDSU will be its third straight against WWC opposition. The 17th-ranked Beavers are 5-3 after dropping a 23-22 decision to then-No. 13 Wyoming Sunday, Jan. 15. OSU will wrestle Northern Colorado Friday. The Beavers have five ranked wrestlers – including No. 5 Mike Mangrum (141) and No. 5 Clayton Jack (heavyweight). Head coach Jim Zalesky is in his sixth season.

NDSU receiving votes
North Dakota State is receiving votes in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll released Tuesday, Jan. 17. It is the first time since the move to Division I that the Bison have received votes.

Monk, Sprenkle crack 20-win mark
After going 5-0 at the Virginia Duals, 157-pounder Steven Monk has an overall record of 24-6 and leads the team in wins. He is only two wins off last year’s total of 26. Monk also leads the team in pins with nine. Sprenkle has compiled a 21-9 record so far this year.

Monk ranked 11th by InterMat
North Dakota State sophomore Steven Monk maintains his position at No. 11 at 157 pounds in the latest InterMat rankings released Jan. 17 after going 5-0 at the Virginia Duals. He is also ranked No. 10 by WrestlingReport.com and No. 9 by WIN Magazine. Trent Sprenkle fell out of the rankings for the first time this season.

Bison sixth at Virginia Duals
NDSU finished sixth at the Virginia Duals after dropping a close 20-18 decision to then-No. 20 Rutgers Saturday, Jan. 14. The Bison finished the weekend with a 3-2 record, defeating Campbell, Arizona State and The Citadel and falling to then-No. 9 Missouri and Rutgers. Steven Monk finished the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record at 157 pounds.
