Bison Take Sixth Place at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The North Dakota State wrestling team finished in sixth place at the Virginia Duals after going 2-1 on the final day of competition. Sophomore Steven Monk was the only Bison to go through the weekend undefeated at 5-0.

The Bison opened with a 23-19 win over Arizona State. After No. 19 Trent Sprenkle pinned David Prado at 125, the Sun Devils won the next three in a row to take a 9-6 lead. No. 11 Monk gave NDSU the lead back with an 18-0 technical fall of Hans Rasmusson at 157 pounds and Tyler Johnson followed up with a pin of Victor De Jesus at 165 pounds. Mac Stoll won a 10-6 decision over Kevin Radford at 184 and John Gusewelle clinched the win for the Bison with a 5-4 win over Tommy Burriel at 197 pounds.

In the second match of the day, the Bison jumped out to a 15-3 lead on The Citadel, winning five of the first six matches by decision. Turtogtokh Luvsandorj pinned Joe Garner at 174 pounds and Kelby Smith won a 6-3 decision over Gusewelle at 197 pounds to cut NDSU’s lead to six. In the heavyweight bout, Odie Delaney pinned Evan Knutson in 1:59 to tie the match at 18-18. The Bison advanced to the fifth place bout based on criterion 1, winning six of the matches.

The Bison took on No. 20 Rutgers in the fifth place match. The Scarlet Knights won the first three bouts to take a 10-0 lead, but the Bison battled back to win the next three. Mark Erickson won a 5-3 decision over Anthony Perrotti at 149 and Monk followed up with a pin of Anthony Volpe at 157. Johnson gave the Bison a 12-10 lead with a 8-1 victory over Douglass Hamann. Rutgers won the next two bouts by decision to take a 16-12 lead and clinched the win after Daniel Rinaldi won an 11-2 major decision over Gusewelle at 197.

The Bison continue their road swing next weekend as they travel west to take on Boise State Jan. 20 and Oregon State Jan. 22.
