The 10th-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team placed second at the first annual Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. Eighth-ranked Missouri led the 22-team field with 185 points followed by Minnesota with 169.5. The Tigers had four wrestlers win individual titles, while the Golden Gophers had three champions.
All three of Minnesota’s top seeds won individual titles, including Damion Hahn at 197. Hahn finished 4-0 in the tournament and claimed the title with a 5-3 decision against Missouri’s Jeff Foust. Junior Bobbe Lowe won the title at 125 pounds with a 5-2 decision against third-seeded Jacob Gray of Edinboro. Redshirt freshman Cole Konrad continued his dominance with the title at heavyweight. Konrad improved to 17-2 on the season with a 5-0 decision against third- seeded Mike Whitehead of Missouri.
Redshirt freshman Quincy Osborn and sophomore Matt Nagel earned second-place finishes at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively. Osborn was defeated by top-seeded Sean Markey of the Citadel, 7-3. Nagel fell in the championship match against top-seeded Kenny Burleson of Missouri, 10-4.
Sophomore Tommy Owen and junior Josh McLay claimed third-place finishes, while junior Jon Duncombe and senior Jacob Volkmann finished in fourth.
The Golden Gophers return to dual meet action on Thursday in Rochester, Minn. Minnesota will face No. 4 Nebraska and No. 10 Arizona State beginning at 2 p.m.
