The 2009 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features thirty-one first-team members, thirty second-team members, twenty-nine third-team members, and forty honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by their coach and principal verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receives two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Tony Nelson of Cambridge-Isanti. Tony capped his high school career with the Class AAA 215-pound state title, a perfect 47-0 record, and a 4.0 GPA.
Not far behind Nelson were seniors Kevin Steinhaus and Mitchell Hagen of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, and junior Zachary Keller, Medford.
Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including seven champions and nine runners-up. First-team members have an average season win percentage of 91%, an average of over forty season wins, and an average GPA of 3.88.
Fifteen nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA (or higher): Rob Allen of Northfield, Max Anderson of Dassel-Cokato, Marshal Ash of Milaca, Scott Coughlin of Trinity at River Ridge, Tristin Faust of Northfield, Ben Gaughan of Moorhead, Cody Hansen of Albert Lea Area, Zachary Keller of Medford, Nicholas Libby of Minnetonka, Matt Moenkedick of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale, Tony Nelson of Cambridge-Isanti, Jared Pawelk of Waconia, Nick Rydell of Saint Peter, Tyler Stevens of Elk River, and Chris Stevermer of Prior Lake.
Four nominees finished as undefeated 2009 state champions and all four made our first or second team: Mitchell Hagen of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, Justin LaValle of Apple Valley, Tony Nelson of Cambridge-Isanti, and Kevin Steinhaus of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

Eight teams had three first, second, and third-team members: Anoka, Apple Valley, Hastings, Hutchinson, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, Perham, River Valley, and Yellow Medicine East.

Tony Nelson, 215 lbs.
Cambridge-Isanti, 12th
Tony is a four-time state entrant winning the Class AAA title this year. He placed second at 215 pounds as a junior and third at 215 pounds as a sophomore. Tony finished his season undefeated with 47 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 141-18. Tony’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2009 NHSCA Senior National champion in April, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, three-time All-Conference, two-time All-Conference in football and he will be playing in the H.S. All-Star football game. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree. Tony’s parents are Todd & Sandi and his coach is Neil Jennissen.
Kevin Steinhaus, 160 lbs.
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 12th
Kevin is a three-time state champion.He won the 160-pound Class A title this year, the 152-pound title as a junior, and the 145-pound title as a sophomore. Kevin also placed third as a freshman and second as an eighth-grader. Kevin finished his season undefeated with 50 wins and ended his high school career with a record of 246-12 (95.3 win %). Kevin’s GPA is 3.92. Honors include 2009 MWCA Mr. Minnesota Wrestler, four-year team captain, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, and quarterback and cornerback on the 2009 KMS state champion football team. Future plans are to wrestle for the Gophers in the fall. Kevin’s parents are Mike & Suzanne and his coach is Wes Haglund.
Mitchell Hagen, 171 lbs.
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 12th
Mitchell is a three-time state placer winning the Class A title this year. He placed third at 160 pounds as a junior and sixth at 152 pounds as a sophomore. Mitchell finished his season undefeated with 49 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 168-62. Mitchell’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, 2008 & 2009 MWCA Academic All-State, 2008 & 2009 MWCA State Champion Academic Team member, and fullback and linebacker on the 2009 KMS state champion football team. Future plans are to wrestle in college but he is undecided where at this point. Mitchell’s parents are Kris & Shawn and his coach is Wes Haglund.
Zachary Keller, 103 lbs.

Zachary was the Class A 103-pound runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Zachary had a season record of 43-6. His current career record is 80-16. Zachary’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-year letter winner, Medford Coaches Award, Academic All-Conference – three years, All-Conference – two years, Owatonna People’s Press All-Area Team – two years, Spotlight on Scholarship Gold Award, and student council. Zachary is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college with a possible degree in Mathematics or Actuarial Science. Zachary’s parents are Terry & Sherry and his coach is Dennis Whitman.

Ryan is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 145-pound runner-up this year. He placed fifth at 145 pounds as a junior. Ryan had a season record of 40-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 185-40. Ryan’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include five-time All-Conference, two-year captain, school record most career wins, 111 career pins, MN Cadet and Junior National Dual Team, 2008 State Greco Champion, and 2008 State freestyle runner-up. Ryan is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend either the University of Minnesota or MIT and pursue a degree in Engineering. Ryan’s parents are Randy & Linda and his coach is Todd Card.

Kraig is a three-time state entrant placing second at 189 pounds this year in Class AA. Kraig had a season record of 42-6. His current career record is 107-30. Kraig’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include three-time Mississippi 8 All-Conference, Academic All-Conference, and 2008 football All-Conference. Kraig’s parents are Klayton & Teresa and his coach is Dan Lefebvre.

Cody is a four-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He placed third at 125 pounds this year and third at 112 pounds as a junior. He was the Class AAA 103-pound runner-up as a sophomore. Cody had a season record of 44-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 167-37. Cody’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include team captain, 2007 MN Christmas Tournament champion, two-time Big 9 All-Conference, All-Clash Tournament Team, and two-time MWCA Academic Team State Champion member. Cody is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Augsburg College in the fall and to become an elementary teacher and a coach. Cody’s parents are Jon & Vicki and his coach is Larry Goodnature.

Chris is a three-time state entrant placing third at 152 pounds this year in Class AAA. He also placed fifth at 145 pounds as a junior and sixth at 140 pounds as a freshman. Chris had a season record of 39-7. He ended his high school career with a record of 173-47. Chris’ GPA is 4.035. Honors and achievements include three-year captain, five-time Missota All-Conference, 2009 MWCA Academic All-State, three-year Board Scholar (3.8 GPA or higher), four-year Missota Conference All-Academic, two-time Patrick Ferris Award (highest GPA), and three-time Iron Man Award in football. Future plans are to wrestle in college but he is currently undecided between two schools. Chris’ parents are Pat & Sherry and his coach is Joe Block.

Foley, 12th
Kris won the Class AA title this year at 215 pounds. He is a three-time state entrant. Kris had an impressive season record of 45-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 132-28. Kris’ GPA is 3.67. Honors and achievements include team captain and MVP, earned 235 team points and gave up 3, All-Conference, MWCA Academic All-State, West Central Conference MVP Player of the Year for football, and Honorable Mention All-State for football. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth on an academic and athletic scholarship. He plans to pursue a degree in Engineering and play football. Kris’ parents are Steve & Carolyn and his coach is Lyle Freudenberg.
Drew Lexvold, 125 lbs.
Kenyon-Wanamingo, 11th
Drew won the Class A title this year at 125 pounds. He is a three-time state entrant. Drew had a season record of 31-3. His current career record is 136-19. Drew’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include 2008 Cadet folkstyle and Greco national champion, 2008 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals runner-up, four-year HVL All-Conference and Academic All-Conference, and 2009 Kenyon-Wanamingo Most Valuable Wrestler and Most Dedicated/Hardest Worker. Future plans are attend college for Engineering and wrestle and to possibly coach some day. Drew’s parents are Wayne & Donna and his coach is Matt Ryan.
Dalton Henderson, 171 lbs.
Owatonna, 11th
Dalton is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AAA 171-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. He was ranked #1 his junior year at the time of a season-ending knee injury. Dalton had a season record of 39-6. His current career record is 113-27. Dalton’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include three-sport athlete (football, wrestling, and track), and All-Conference in football. Future plans are to attend college and wrestle. Dalton’s parents are Bill Henderson & Carmen Krell and his coach is Scot Davis.
Alex Bach, 189 lbs.

Alex is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class A 189-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 171 pounds as a junior. Alex had an impressive season record of 33-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 178-47. Alex’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include school record for career wins, 2009 MWCA Academic All-State, two-time conference champ, two-year team captain, team MVP, team Eagle Award, senior class president, and student council. Alex is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend West Point to wrestle and study Engineering or Criminal Investigation. Alex’s parents are Gary & Julie and his coach is Jeff Soma.

Micah is a four-time state entrant placing third at 171 pounds this year in Class A. Micah had a season record of 42-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 140-35. Micah’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include four-time All-Conference, two-time captain, MWCA scholarship winner, student council, Spotlight on Scholarship Award, and Cadet All-American. Micah is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Southwest Minnesota State University. Micah’s parents are Mark & Cleone and his coach is Dan Rouser.

Kevin is a three-time state entrant winning the Class AA title at 145 pounds as a junior. He placed second at 152 pounds this year. Kevin had a season record of 38-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 171-30. Kevin’s GPA is 3.87. Honors and achievements include MWCA scholarship winner. Future plans are to wrestle for Army at West Point. Kevin’s parents are Lois & Ken and his coach is Brad Novak.
Robert Fisher, 135 lbs.

Robert is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the 135-pound Class AAA title this year and the 125-pound title as a junior. Robert also placed fourth at 119 pounds as a sophomore. Robert had an impressive season record of 45-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 157-54. Robert’s GPA is 3.6. Honors and achievements include team captain, 2008 USA Wrestling Nationals third place in folkstyle and Greco, two-time All-Conference, and cross country team captain. Robert is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Minnesota State University Mankato and to eventually teach and coach at the high school or college level. Robert’s parents are Troy & Allison and his coach is Charles Vavrosky.

Tony is a three-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class A 130-pound runner-up this year. He also placed third at 119 pounds as a sophomore and fourth at 103 pounds as a freshman. Tony had a season record of 39-3. His current career record is 147-19. Tony’s GPA is 3.86. Honors and achievements include 2009 Journal Wrestler of the Year, 2009 KNUJ Wrestler of the Year, 2009 NHSCA Junior Nationals runner-up, 2008 NHSCA Academic All-American, three-time Valley Conference champion, 2009 MWCA Academic All-State, and team captain. Tony is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and continue his wrestling career. Tony’s parents are Roger & LeAnne and his coach is Jeff Briard.

Ethan is a four-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class A 119-pound runner-up last year as a sophomore. He placed third at 125 pounds this season. Ethan had an impressive season record of 34-2. His current career record is 145-38. Ethan’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State, three-time Conference Champion, two-time Outstanding Wrestler, and two-time KNUJ Wrestler of the Week. Ethan is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at a college yet to be determined. Ethan’s parents are Eugene & Julie and his coach is his father.

Tossaporn, AKA Boyd, is a two-time state entrant winning the Class AA 130 pound title last year. He was the runner up at 135 pounds this season. Tossaporn had a season record of 40-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 160-54. Tossaporn’s GPA is 3.79. Honors and achievements include two-time North Suburban All-Conference and North Branch all time wins leader. Future plans are to go to college and wrestle. He is unsure of an area of study. Tossaporn’s parents are Sirichai & Wanphen and his coach is Tony Aho.

Brad is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class A heavyweight runner-up last year. He placed third at heavyweight as a senior. Brad had a season record of 40-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 109-29. Brad’s GPA is 3.83. Honors and achievements include 2009 Team MVP, 2008 Hardest Worker, 2007 Most Improved, and 2009 MWCA Academic All-State. Brad is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend St. Cloud State University. Brad’s parents are Roger & Karen and his coach is Perry Fink.

Brian placed third at state this year at 189 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Brian had a season record of 38-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 102-50. Brian’s GPA is 3.83. Honors and achievements include three-time All-Conference, 2009 Mental Aerobics Tournament champion, National Merit Scholarship, placed fifth in state in Knowledge Bowl, Eagle Scout, captain and All-Conference in football in 2008. Future plans are to attend MIT in Cambridge and major in Neuroscience or Neurobiology and possibly become a researcher. Brian’s parents are Greg & Ceci and his coach is Andrew Ourada.

Trent is a five-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class AAA 125-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 119 pounds as a junior and fifth at 112 pounds as a sophomore. Trent had an impressive season record of 44-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 193-30. Trent’s GPA is 3.65. Honors and achievements include 2009 MWCA Academic All-State, five-time All-Conference, and most career victories ever for St. Francis. Future plans are to attend St. Cloud State and wrestle for the Huskies. Trent’s parents are Perry & Kathy and his coach is Keith Lipinski.

His current career record is 104-41. Justin’s GPA is 3.8. Honors and achievements include 2009-10 team captain, honor roll student, and five-year letter winner. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and wrestle. Justin’s parents are John & Lisa and his coach is Lyle Freudenberg.

Matt is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 171 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed sixth at 171 pounds as a junior. Matt had a season record of 37-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 146-28. Matt’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include All-State in football. Future plans are to attend college and play football. Jake is a two-time state entrant winning the heavyweight Class AAA title this year. He placed third at heavyweight as a junior. Jake had an impressive season record of 28-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 95-25. Jake’s GPA is 3.57. Honors and achievements include two-year captain, four-year letter winner, 2008 USA Wrestling National Greco All-American, 2007 and 2008 USA Wrestling Folkstyle All-American, two-year letter winner for football, and 2008 football captain. Future plans are to wrestle for the University of Minnesota and pursue a degree that will allow him to teach and possibly coach wrestling.
