The 2010 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features thirty first-team members, thirty second-team members, thirty third-team members, and twenty honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receives two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Andrew Youngblom of Mora. Andrew capped his high school career with the Class AA 140-pound state title, a near-perfect 42-1 record, and a 4.19 GPA.
Not far behind Youngblom is senior Marshal Ash of Milaca and junior Tyler Mergen of Monticello.
Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including twelve champions and four runners-up. First-team members have an average season win percentage of 93%, an average of just over forty season wins, and an average GPA of 3.84.
Fourteen nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA (or higher): Max Anderson of Dassel-Cokato, Marshal Ash, Scott Coughlin of Trinity at River Ridge, Tristin Faust of Northfield, Garret Garness of Kasson-Mantorville, Ben Gaughan of Moorhead, Cory Hansen of Albert Lea Area, Zach Keller of Medford, Kyle LeDuc of Thief River Falls/Goodridge, Nick Rydell of Saint Peter, Ethan Skog of Meadow Creek/Spectrum, Tyler Stevens of Elk River, Tommy Teigen of Meadow Creek/Spectrum, and Andrew Youngblom.
Three nominees finished as undefeated 2010 state champions and all three made our first or second team: Travis Borchert of Browerville/Eagle Valley, Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, and Dylan Ness of Bloomington Kennedy.
Repeat Guillotine first-team members are John Gusewelle of Sauk Centre, Dalton Henderson of Owatonna, Ethan Hildebrandt of Saint James, Zach Keller of Medford, Kyle LeDuc, Tony Vaske of River Valley, and Samuel Warne of Perham.
Foley, Hastings, and Simley had the most first, second, and third-team members with four.
Three teams had three first, second, and third-team members: Centennial, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, and Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

First Team
Andrew Youngblom, 140 lbs.
Mora, 12th
Andrew is a three-time state placer, winning the Class AA title this year. He placed fourth at 135 pounds as a junior and fourth at 130 pounds as a sophomore. Andrew had an impressive season record of 42-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 201-31. Andrew’s GPA on a weighted scale is 4.19. Honors and achievements include three-time team MVP, three-time All-Conference, two-time team captain, all-time Mora leader in wins (201), pins (105), and career team points (903). He was a team captain and All-Conference in football. Andrew is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle for South Dakota State. Andrew’s parents are Tom and Kris and his coach is his father.
Marshal Ash, 215 lbs.
Milaca, 12th
Marshal is a two-time state entrant winning the 215-pound Class AA title this year. He placed fifth at 215 pounds as a junior. Marshal had a season record of 41-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 110-24. Marshal’s GPA is a perfect 4.0. Honors and achievements include West Central Conference Academic Team in wrestling and football, voted the “Hardest Worker” for wrestling the last two years, and National Football Association Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. Marshal is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are medical school. Marshal’s parents are Gayle and Paul and his coach is Randy Zimmer.
Tyler Mergen, 145 lbs.
Monticello, 11th
Tyler won the Class AA title this year at 145 pounds. He is a two-time state entrant. Tyler had an impressive season record of 39-1. His current career record is 130-17. Tyler’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include being a two-time section champion and a three-time All-Conference selection. Future plans are to wrestle at a Division I school. Tyler’s parents are Paula and David and his coach is Andy Zigan.
Kyle LeDuc, 135 lbs.
Thief River Falls/Goodridge, 12th
Kyle is a four-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 135-pound runner-up this year. He placed third at 125 pounds as a junior and sixth at 112 pounds as a sophomore. Kyle had an impressive season record of 47-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 172-36. Kyle’s GPA is a perfect 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2009 Guillotine Academic All-State, 2009 Rumble on the Red champion, two-year captain, five-year letter winner, and 2009 Team Minnesota Junior Nationals member. Future plans are to wrestle at a four-year college and pursue something in the medical field. Kyle’s parents are John and Julie and his coach is Kenny Geiser.
Garret Garness, 130 lbs.
Kasson-Mantorville, 11th
Garret is a three-time state finalist. He won the 103-pound Class AA title as an eighth-grader. Garret was runner-up at 130 pounds as a junior and at 125 pounds as a sophomore. Garret had a season record of 44-6. His current career record is 173-32. Garret’s GPA is a perfect 4.0. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State, career wins record holder at Kasson-Mantorville, Student Council since ninth grade, LINK Crew Leader (school-based organization). Garret is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle in college at a four-year university and majoring in sports psychology. Garret’s parents are Ken and Virginia and his coach is Paul Mann.
Tony Vaske, 140 lbs.
River Valley, 12th
Tony won the Class A title this year at 140 pounds. He was runner-up at 130-pounds as a junior. Tony also placed third at 119 pounds as a sophomore and fourth at 103 pounds as a freshman. Tony had an impressive season record of 36-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 183-19 (90.6 win %). Tony’s GPA is 3.84. Honors and achievements include four-time conference champion, two-year captain, 2009 NHSCA National Championships runner-up, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2009 Guillotine Academic All-State, and two-time NHSCA Academic All-American. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State and continue his wrestling career. He plans to major in mathematics and eventually enroll into their pre-med program. Tony’s parents are Roger and LeAnne and his coach is Jeff Briard.
Travis Borchert, 119 lbs.
Browerville/Eagle Valley, 12th
Travis is a three-time state placer, winning the Class A title this year. He placed fifth at 112 pounds as a junior and third at 103 pounds as a sophomore. Travis finished his season undefeated with 45 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 150-12 (92.6 win %). Travis’s GPA is 3.67. Honors and achievements include three-time conference champion, two-time conference MVP, and MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are undecided. Travis’s parents are Keneth and Michelle and his coach is Andy Lancaster.
Dalton Henderson, 189 lbs.
Owatonna, 12th
Dalton is a four-time state entrant, winning the Class AAA title this year. He placed second at 171 pounds as a junior and fourth at 160 pounds as a freshman. Dalton was ranked #1 as a sophomore before injury ended his season. He had an impressive season record this year of 30-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 143-29. Dalton’s GPA is 3.82. Honors and achievements include Southeastern Minnesota Wrestling Coalition Section 1AAA MVW, Owatonna People’s Press All-Area Wrestler of the Year, 2009 Guillotine Academic All-State, and 2010 MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to attend and wrestle at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Dalton’s parents are Bill and Kerrie Henderson and Carmen Krell and his coach is Scot Davis.
Tommy Teigen, 160 lbs.
Meadow Creek/Spectrum, 12th
Tommy is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 160 pounds this year in Class AA. Tommy had a season record of 34-8. He ended his high school career with a record of 109-54. Tommy’s GPA is 4.28. Honors and achievements include five-year letter winner, five-time Iron Man, two-year captain, MSHSL Spotlight on Scholarship Gold Award, MWCA Scholarship Award, and four-time academic letter winner. Tommy is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle in college, get a degree in health, fitness, or a medical field, and live to win the prize! Tommy’s parents are Greg and Rishelle and his coaches are Darrell Skog and Sean Ryther.
John Gusewelle, 189 lbs.
Sauk Centre, 12th
John is a three-time state entrant placing third at 189 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed third at 160 pounds as a junior. John had a season record of 41-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 143-58. John’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include 2010 MWCA Academic All-State, 2009 MVP, and A Honor-Roll 9th-12th. Future plans are to wrestle in college, though currently undecided where. John’s parents are Kevin and Mary and his coach is Ken Vogt.
Jordan Kingsley, 103 lbs.
Apple Valley, 11th
Jordan placed third at state this year at 103 pounds in Class AAA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Jordan had a season record of 45-5. His current career record is 92-10 (90.2 win %). Jordan’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include All-Academic Section Team, 2010 MWCA All-State Academic Team, Fargo Cadet All-American in 2008, and undefeated at Junior Duals in 2009. Future plans are to attend college for Pharmacy and to wrestle. Jordan’s parents are Sheila and Roger and his coach is Jim Jackson.
Zach Keller, 112 lbs.
Medford, 12th
Zach is a two-time state placewinner. He was the Class A 103-pound runner-up last year. He placed third at 112 pounds as a senior. Zach had an impressive season record of 33-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 113-18. Zach’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include team captain, three-time all-conference, three-time academic all-conference, Student Council President, and Vice President of Minnesota Association of Student Councils. Zach is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Drake University. Zach’s parents are Terry and Sherry and his coach is Dennis Whitman.
Brad Keller, 152 lbs.
Medford, 12th
Brad was the Class A 152-pound runner-up this year. He is a two-time state entrant. Brad had a season record of 40-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 103-22. Brad’s GPA is 3.83. Honors and achievements include team captain, two-time all-conference, two-time academic all-conference, Student Council, and Business Professionals of America member. Future plans are undecided. Brad’s parents are Mike and Jane and his coach is Dennis Whitman.

Sean is a three-time state entrant, placing third at 160 pounds this year in Class A. Sean had a season record of 41-6. His current career record is 120-32. Sean’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include Paul Bunyan Invitational runner-up. Sean’s parents are Jerry and Susan and his coach is Simon Waltman.

Dassel-Cokato, 12th
Max is a two-time state entrant placing fourth at 112 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed sixth at 103 pounds as a junior. Max had a season record of 36-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 109-17. Max’s GPA is 4.13. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, KDUZ Radio All-Area Team, team captain, 2009 MWCA All-State Academic, 2009 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team. Future plans are to go to a four-year school, possibly for law enforcement or environmental studies, and maybe wrestle. Max’s parents are Bob and Ruth and his coach is Bryan Clemen.
Brandon Seppelt, 145 lbs.

Brandon is a five-time state entrant placing third at 145 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed fifth at 140 pounds as a junior and sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Brandon had a season record of 48-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 183-45. Brandon’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include all-conference for football and multiple times all-conference for wrestling. Brandon is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle in college. Brandon’s parents are Arlen and Deb and his coach is Lyle Freudenberg.
Dylan Ness, 145 lbs.
Bloomington Kennedy, 12th
Dylan is a four-time state placer winning the Class AAA title this year. He placed third at 140 pounds as a junior, third at 119 pounds as a sophomore, and third at 103 pounds as a freshman. Dylan finished his season undefeated with 44 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 192-19 (91 win %). Dylan’s GPA is 3.54. Honors and achievements include 2010 MWCA Mr. Minnesota Wrestler, 2010 Pioneer Press Wrestler of the Year, Junior Folkstyle National Champion, Junior Freestyle and Greco-Roman All-American, Cadet Triple Crown Winner, two-time MN Christmas Tournament champion (1X OW), and three-time Bi-State Tournament champion (2X OW). Future plans are to wrestle for the University of Minnesota. Dylan’s parents are Sally and Jay and his coach is Charles Vavrosky.

Mitch is a three-time state placer, winning the Class AAA title this year. He placed third at 189 pounds as a junior and sixth at 189 pounds as a sophomore. Mitch had an impressive season record of 43-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 118-17. Mitch’s GPA is 3.54. Honors and achievements include three-time NWSC All-Conference, 2010 captain, AAA Award winner at Centennial, 2010 MWCA All-State Academic Team, and 2009 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team. Future plans are to major in Pre-Med at Wartburg. Mitch’s parents are Al and Julie and his coach is John Bergeland.

Cory is a two-time state finalist and a three-time placer. He was the Class AAA 112-pound runner-up last year as a sophomore and the 102-pound runner-up as a freshman. He also placed fourth at 135 pounds this year as a junior. Cory had a season record of 40-6. His current career record is 128-18. Cory’s GPA is 4.06. Honors and achievements include the MWCA Academic State Team Gold Award, three-time Big 9 All-Conference, and member of two state team runner-up finishes. Cory is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and maybe wrestle. Cory’s parents are Jon and Vicki and his coach is Larry Goodnature.

Clint is a three-time state placer. He placed third at 135 pounds as a junior, sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman, and first at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Clint had a season record of 38-3. His current career record is 181-27. Clint’s GPA is 3.84. Clint’s parents are Kevin and Karen and his coach is Simon Waltman.

Samuel is a five-time state entrant, placing third at 125 pounds this year in Class AA. He placed fourth at 125 pounds as a junior and fifth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Samuel had an impressive season record of 41-2. He ended his HS career with a record of 198-44. Samuel’s GPA is 3.8. Honors and achievements include member of Student Council and Students Today Leaders Forever, four-time conference champion, and member of four Perham state tournament teams (2nd twice). Samuel is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the US Navel Academy and study engineering. Samuel’s parents are Darrell and Pattie and his coach is Robb Moser.

Pine Island, 12th
Benjamin is a two-time state finalist and a three-time placer. He was the Class A 171-pound runner-up this year as a senior and the 171-pound runner-up as a junior. He also placed fifth at 171 pounds as a sophomore. Benjamin had an impressive season record of 36-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 170-64. Benjamin’s GPA is 3.75. Honors and achievements include three-time section champion, and four-time all-conference. Future plans are to attend a four-year college to wrestle and earn a degree and “hopefully one day start a family, teach, and coach, but most of all trust in the Lord to guide me.” Benjamin’s parents are Donald and Ruth and his coach is Tony Brown.

Hayden is a two-time state champion. He won the 112-pound Class A title this year and the 103-pound title as a sophomore. Hayden had an impressive season record of 42-2. His current career record is 123-10 (92.5 win %). Hayden’s GPA is 3.47. Honors and achievements include being a five-time USA Cadet National Champion. Future plans are to wrestle at the Division I level and train for the Olympics. Hayden’s parents are Mary and Nick and his coach is Champ Hesch.
Tyler Stevens, 135 lbs.
Elk River, 12th
Tyler is a three-time state entrant, placing fifth at 135 pounds this year in Class AAA. Tyler had a season record of 42-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 167-50. Tyler’s GPA is 4.07. Honors and achievements include six-time letter winner, four-time all-conference, two-time captain, five-time all-conference in cross country, captain of the track team, and an Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts). Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend UM-Duluth and run cross country. He plans on majoring in biochemistry and would like to earn a PHD some day. Tyler’s parents are Ed and Kris and his coach is Paul Nelson.

Will is a four-time state entrant placing third at 119 pounds this year in Class A. Will had a season record of 46-3. His current career record is 163-41. Will’s GPA is 3.69. Honors and achievements include team captain, 2010 Mental Aerobics Tournament fourth place, 2009 Big Horn Nationals second place, two years of choir, Spanish Club, Youth Leadership Forum Medical – Boston 2009, and People to People Friendship Games – Amsterdam 2008. Will is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle in college if he can get the opportunity. He plans to pursue a career in a medical field. Will’s parents are Bill and Kelly and his coach is Paul Frisch.

Kurtis is a three-time state entrant winning the Class AA title this year. He placed third at 152 pounds as a junior. Kurtis had a season record of 44-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 121-24. Kurtis’s GPA is 3.4. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference and Junior Freestyle National Team member. Future plans are to wrestle for North Dakota State. Kurtis’s parents are Tom and Deb and his coaches are Will and Jim Short.

Tommy is a three-time state placer, winning the Class AA title this year. He placed fourth at 130 pounds as a junior and fifth at 119 pounds as a sophomore. Tommy had a season record of 42-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 158-48. Tommy’s GPA is 3.41. Honors and achievements include 2010 NHSCA Senior National Championships sixth place, 2008 USA Wrestling Nationals Cadet runner-up, and Junior Freestyle National Team member. Jacoby is a two-time state entrant, winning the 103-pound Class AA title last year. He placed fifth at 112 pounds this season as a junior. Jacoby had a season record of 44-4. His current career record is 101-7 (93.5 win %). Jacoby’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include seven-time USA Wrestling All-American, 2009 USA Wrestling Western Regional Junior Champion, A Honor Roll every quarter, and three-time Team Minnesota USA Wrestler.
