SDSU posts 0-1-1 record at endowment match

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State wrestling team posted a 0-1-1 record against Northern State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at the inaugural Jackrabbit Triangular endowment meet Sunday in Brookings, S.D. Ticket sales from the event directly benefited the Jackrabbit Wrestling Endowment.

The Jacks battled Northern State in the first dual of the day. The Wolves picked up an early 6-0 lead with a Jackrabbit forfeit in the 125-pound weight class, but Aaron Pickrel notched three team points with a 7-5 decision over Ian Muirhead.

NSU extended its lead to 9-3 when Benton Crow defeated Jackrabbit Kevin Caruso 7-2.

Jimmy Hamilton picked up another win for the Jacks with a 6-2 decision over Beau Voegeli, but couldn’t get the tying points as Andrew Youngblom dropped the 157-pound match to Blake Lundgren 7-4.

The Jacks found wins in the next three match-ups. John Nething II recorded a major decision over Neil Sell, 11-2, and David Michaud’s win by fall in 3:28 over Chad Gibson put the Jacks up 16-12.

Cord Willers gave the Jacks a 19-12 cushion with a 7-2 decision over Baker Haar but the Wolves came back with Brent Foscheim’s major decision over Kyle Larson to make the team score 19-16.

In the heavyweight matchup, Matt Meuleners of NSU recorded the equalizing win with a 2-1 decision over Kevin Kelly to end the dual in a 19-19 tie.

In the second dual of the Jackrabbit Triangular, Northern State defeated Southern-Illinois Edwardsville 21-18.

The Jacks faced the SIUE Cougars in the third and final dual of the day.

After a double forfeit for the 125-pounders, Pickrel put the Jacks on the board early with a win by fall in 1:32 over Cameron Vance.

Lawrence Blackful rebounded with a 3-1 decision over Caruso but Hamilton kept the Jacks on top with a 6-0 decision over Derrick Pousson to put the Jacks up 9-3.

The Cougars won the next two matches to even out the score 9-9 but Michaud beat Deshoun White 7-5 to give the Jacks a 12-9 lead.

SIUE kept up with the Jacks as Jordon Bakley recorded a decision over Willers to even out the score 12-12.

The Cougars won the final two matches of the day to end the scoring at 18-12.

The Jacks, now 1-5-1 on the season, compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 19. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. from Reno, Nev.
