No. 2 Augustana beats Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. – No. 2 Augustana had three wins by major decision and another by technical fall as the Vikings cruised to a 32-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Northern State Thursday night in Aberdeen, S.D.

Augustana moves to 8-1 (2-0 NSIC), while NSU drops to 3-4 (0-3 NSIC).

Action began at 174 pounds; the Vikings broke away from a 6-6 tie and won the dual’s final six matches.

Carl Serck’s 8-3 victory over Chad Gibson at 174 pounds opened the dual, but NSU immediately answered at 184 pounds after Cale Corneman edged Tom Davies in a 3-1 decision.

A Viking win by decision from Ty Copsey at 197 pounds gave Augustana a 6-3 advantage. NSU’s Matthew Mueleners checked in with a 4-0 win by decision over Lance Peters in the heavyweight bout to knot the contest at 6-6.

From there, the Vikings would roll.

NSU left 125 pounds open. Cody Lensing earned a 14-4 major decision against NSU’s Ian Muirhead at 133 pounds, and Jay Sherer followed with a 5-3 win by decision over Benton Crow at 141 pounds.

Chism Fink used seven takedowns in his 149-pound match to collect a 16-6 major decision, while Marcus Edgington followed suite at 157 pounds, notching five takedowns en route to a 12-3 win by major decision.

Gavin Nelson ended his 165-pound match early, beating the Wolves’ Neil Sell by technical fall in 5:32.

Augustana travels to Bismarck, N.D., tomorrow to battle U-Mary at 7 p.m. in a conference dual.
