Cobbers Dismiss Oles 34-9

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — No.7-ranked Concordia won eight of the 10 individual matches against St. Olaf and went on to post a 34-9 over the Oles in Northfield on Friday. It is the fourth straight dual meet win for the Cobbers and fifth in the past six matches.

The overriding storyline for the Cobbers as they head into the final days of January is the career wins race between seniors Justin Berns and Phil Monekedick. Both wrestlers posted dominating wins on Friday and both wrestlers inched closer to the school’s all-time win record. Berns recorded a 15-1 major decision victory at 157 to move his season record to 18-3. Moenkedick made short work of his opponent at 184 by recording a pin fall at 1:26. The defending national champion, Moenkedick is now 22-1 on the year. Both Berns and Moenkedick have 122 career wins and both need three more victories to surpass the program record of 124 set by Steve Larsen.

All told against the Oles, the Cobbers won three matches by decision, two by major decision, one by pin fall, one by technical fall and one by forfeit.

Daron Hohbein walked away with the technical fall as he scored a 16-1 win at 133. Ben Presler, Kevin Fynboh, Ross Dankers, Nathan Schmitz and Tom Bouressa also recorded victories for CC. Bouressa blanked his opponent 8-0 in the 285-lb match and is now 12-1 in his last 13 matches with his only loss coming against No.1-ranked John Helgerson of Wartburg. Schmitz is now 16-7 on the season and is 8-2 in his last 10 matches. Dankers, an All-American last year, earned his 17th win of the year and is 11-1 in his last 12 matches.

Concordia will send a contingent to the Jamestown Open on Saturday, Jan. 22 and then turn its attention to the Minnesota Duals Meet on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at Perham High School. The meet will feature four teams from the old MIAC wrestling conference, three of which are currently ranked in the top 7 of the nation in Division III.
