Mavericks Go 1-1 in Final Day of National Duals
Cedar Falls, Iowa – In day number two of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals held in Cedar Falls, Iowa the Minnesota State Mavericks went 1-1 including a 28-13 win over San Francisco State to seal seventh-place at the event.
After going 2-1 in competition yesterday, the Mavericks turned their attention to North Carolina-Pembroke for their first match on Sunday. The Mavericks found themselves trailing 15-10 after the first eight matches and needed wins from both Brandon Ross and Nate Haynes to complete a comeback victory. However, the Mavericks would only receive one victory in the final two matches as Haynes won a 7-1 decision over Seth Stewart leaving them six points short in a 19-13 contest. Aaron Norgren continued his undefeated weekend as he beat Shiheem Bryant 8-3 which gave him a perfect 4-0 record through the first four matches.
The loss meant that the Mavericks would compete against San Francisco State in the tournaments seventh-place match. With the score knotted at 13-13 through the first seven matches, Norgren would earn a win by fall at the 3:20 mark over Zachariah Jimenez to give the Mavericks a 19-13 lead. The team would not look back from this point as they won their final two matches as Ross earned a win by forfeit and Haynes won a 4-2 decision over Otilio Gonzalez giving the Mavericks a 28-13 victory.
Norgren finished the tournament a perfect 5-0 including two wins by fall. Andy Forstner recorded the second-most wins for the Mavericks as he finished with a 4-1 record.
The Mavericks will return to action on January 14th as they host their first NSIC dual of the season against Mary. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Bresnan Arena.
