Mavericks Set to Compete in NCAA II Regional

What’s Next: With the regular season coming to a close last week, the No. 8 Minnesota State Mavericks will turn their attention to the NCAA Division II Regional this upcoming Sunday, February 27 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Wrestlers will be seeded prior to the event with the top-four placers earning a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship in Kearney, Neb. on March 11-12.
Last Year’s Results: Last season the Mavericks placed seven individual wrestlers in the regional while finishing fourth in the team portion of the tournament with 84.5 team points. Augustana won the regional with 120.5 team points. Current assistant coach Brady Wilson won his fourth-consecutive region title while going on to break the Mavericks individual wins record. Wilson finished his career with 144 career wins.
Ranked Mavericks: Minnesota State currently has four wrestlers ranked in their individual weight classes. Each Maverick held their respective position in their individual classes as the rankings mark the final individual standings of the 2010-11 season. Senior Andy Forstner finishes No. 4 in the 125-lb class while senior Ben Becker finishes No. 6 in the 174-lbs class. The two remaining Mavericks include junior Aaron Norgrenwho ranks sixth in the 184-lb class and junior Pat Mahan who ranks No. 7 in the 197-lb class.
Team and Individual Notes: The No. 8 Mavericks dropped their regular season finale Thursday night as they fell 25-9 to the No. 3 St. Cloud State Huskies…The Mavericks finish the regular season 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the NSIC which is good enough for third-place in the conference…Junior Aaron Norgren (No. 6, 184-lbs) won a 2-1 decision over Michael Berg as he finishes the regular season with a 22-8 overall record and a 13-1 record in dual matches…Senior Andy Forstner (No. 4, 125-lbs) won a 5-4 decision over Dylan Wright as Forstner finishes the season 18-11 overall and 11-3 in dual matches…Junior Pat Mahan (No. 7, 197-lbs) won a 3-2 decision over Lucas Munkelwitz giving the Mavericks their final win of the night…Norgren earned the most wins for MSU in the regular season (22) while both Brendan Eichmann (Fr. 165-lbs) and Tel Todd (Jr. 157-lbs) have earned 19-wins.
About the Coach: Head coach Jim Makovsky (Valley City State ’89) is in his 18th season at MSU. Makovsky, who holds a 220-79-3 overall record at MSU, has coached collegiate wrestling for 21 years and possesses a 243-98-5 career record.
Next Up: The individual wrestlers who finish in the top four of their respective weight classes will move on to the NCAA Division II Championship March 11-12 in Kearney, Neb.
