Mustangs Finish Eighth at NCAA Super Regionals

Johnson Qualifies for NCAA Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team finished eighth out of 10 teams at the NCAA Division II Super Regional Three which was hosted by Augustana College on Sunday. The Mustangs finished with 38.5 team points while St. Cloud State took home the region championship earning 131 team points.

Southwest Minnesota State senior CD Johnson qualified for the NCAA Championships at 184 pounds by winning the true-fourth place match against No. 6 seed Mic Berg of St. Cloud State in a 6-5 decision. This is the second straight year that Johnson has qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Johnson, the No. 5 seed, went 3-2 today, beginning with a 2-1 decision over Cale Corneman of Northern State.

Johnson then lost two consecutive matches losing a 4-2 decision against Aaron Norgren (Minnesota State) and an 8-3 decision to Mitch Schultz (Upper Iowa). The senior then defeated Tom Davies of Augustana College in a 4-0 decision before winning the true-fourth place match.

Justin Reinsma (133, RFr., Slayton, Minn.) picked up a fifth place finish at the NCAA Super Regional Three tournament going 3-2 on the day as the No. 5 seed. Reinsma lost his first bout of the day in a 3-2 decision to the No. 4 seed Eric Ellington (SCSU).

He would then bounce back to win a 6-3 decision over Paul Norgren of Minnesota State. Reinsma then lost his next match to the No. 2 seed Kyle Pedretti (Upper Iowa) before winning the fifth place match against Ian Muirhead (Northern State). The redshirt freshman finished the season with a record of 28-12.

Demond Carter (149, Sr., East St. Louis, Ill.) also finished in fifth place for SMSU going 3-2 on the day. Carter lost his opening match 3-2 against Jacob D. Horn (SCSU) before winning his next two bouts. Carter defeated Landon DellaSilva (U-Mary) in an 8-4 decision. He then earned a 5-3 overtime win over Colby Kriegel of Upper Iowa.

Carter went on to lose his fourth match of the day in a 14-4 major decision against Jesse Westphal (Minnesota State). The senior bounced back to earn fifth place with a 5-3 decision over MSU Moorhead’s Tyler Steinwand.

Brian Rodas (285, Jr., Farmersburg, Iowa) earned fifth place honors in the NCAA Regional tournament. The heavyweight finished the day going 2-2, which started with a 2-1 decision over Lance Peters (Augustana).

Rodas then lost a 12-3 major decision to the No. 1 seed Jake Kahnke (St. Cloud State). The junior was then defeated 3-1 by Lorenzo Serna (Newman, Kan.). Rodas won the fifth place bout by injury default.

St. Cloud State’s Shamus O’Grady was named the Super Regional Three Most Valuable Wrestler while the Huskies head coach Steve Costanzo was named the Super Regional Three Coach of the Year.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the 2010-11 season with an overall record of 8-4-1, including 3-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches which was good for a fourth place finish.

The NCAA Championships will be held March 11-12 in Kearney, Neb. and will be hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
