Sioux Falls, S.D. – Led by the championship effort of junior Aaron Norgen, a total of six Minnesota State wrestlers placed in the top four in their respective weight classes Sunday at the NCAA Super Region 3 tournament held in Sioux Falls, S.D., as the Mavericks tied for third in the final team standings.
The top four place finishers in each weight class earn berths to the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championships, held in Kearney, Neb., March 11-12.
St. Cloud State claimed the team title with 131 points and was followed by Augustana at 120. The Mavericks tied for third with 99 points with Upper Iowa. The rest of the field included Wisconsin-Parkside (74), MSU-Moorhead (49), Indianapolis (42.5), Southwest Minnesota State (38.5), Northern State (34), Mary (21.5) and Newman (16).
Norgren went undefeated in earning his first regional crown at 184 pounds and earning entry to the national meet for the third consecutive year. Also earning trips to the NCAA meet were senior Ben Becker (174, second place), junior Pat Mahan (197, second place), senior Andy Forstner (125, 3rd place), sophomore Jesse Westphal (149, fourth place) and freshman Brandon Eichmann (165, fourth place).
Senior Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.), who was seeded #3 at 125, went 4-1 in finishing third. Forstner won his first match with a 14-5 decision over Matt Garcia of Mary, but fell by an 11-3 margin to Alex Meger of Augustana in the quarterfinals. He responded with a 7-2 win over Dylan Wright of St. Cloud State and defeated Alex Johns (Indianapolis), 7-5, and Corey Ulmer (MSU-Moorhead) D 5-3 in finishing third. Ranked fourth in the nation, Forstner earned his third trip to the national tournament and stands 22-12 for the year.
Wrestling at 133, freshman Paul Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.) lost both of his matches and ends his maiden campaign with a 5-9 mark.
Sophomore Robby Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.), competing at 141, won his first match (7-2 over Ethan Hildebradt (SMSU)) and lost his second (decisioned 7-2 by Matt Irwin (Indianapolis)) before earning a 6-2 win over Benton Crow (NSU). He beat Greg Delk (Newman), 16-3, before losing to Brady Schneeberger (MSU-Moorhead) 14-11. Fisher downed Tanner Beaman (Mary), 13-4, to finish fifth. He completed 2010-11 with a 16-17 mark.
Sophomore Jesse Westphal (Janesville, Minn.), wrestling at 149, finished fourth in earning his first trip to the NCAA meet. Westphal posted a 10-2 major decision over Tyler Steinwand (MSU-Moorhead) before dropping a 6-3 decision to Nick Walpole (Indianapolis) in the semifinals. He responded with a win in the wrestlebacks before lossing his next match in placing fourth. He stands 16-17 for the year.
MSU’s 157-pounder, junior Tel Todd (Bozeman, Mont.), fell in the championship quarterfinals to Dillon Bera (UW-Parkside) before winning his next match and dropping his third bout. Todd completes 2010-11 with a 20-12 mark.
Freshman Brandon Eichmann (Hastings, Minn.), competing at 165, won his first two matches (6-2 over William Fate of SMSU and 6-1 over Bryce Lumzy of Upper Iowa. He lost his next two bouts before gaining a default victory over Lumzy and a 7-6 decision over Tyler Kivel (MSUM), 7-6, in the true fourth-place match to advance to the NCAA meet. Eichmann is 23-18 for the year.
Sixth-rated senior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) advanced to nationals for the third straight season at 174 pounds with a second-place finish. He won his first match – defeating Zach Coates (SMSU) by fall at 1:40. He beat Carl Serck (Augustana), 5-0, in the semis before falling to SCSU’s Shamus OGrady, 13-3 in the championship.Becker will take a 15-7 overall mark into the national tournament.
Junior Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.), MSU’s 184 pounder, earned his third straight trip to the national meet with today’s championship effort. Norgren opened with a by fall at 6:56 over Jeff Weiss (Indianapolis) and decisioned Tyler Hasenbank (Newman), 10-1 in his first two matches. He downed Craig Draper-Johnson (Southwest Minnesota State), 4-2 in the semis and downed Brady Anderson (Mary),3-1, to claim the title. The fourth-rated Norgren, who finshed second at last year’s regional, is 26-8 for 2010-11.
At 197, junior Pat Mahan (Owatonna, Minn.) finished second today in earning his second trip the NCAA championship meet. The seventh-rated Mahan downed Brent Forsheim (NSU), 9-0 and then decisioned Lucas Munkelwitz (SCSU), 5-4 to advance to the championship match. Mahan fell to Tyler Copsey (Augustana), 3-1, in earning a second-place finish. Mahan stands 10-7 for the year.
Freshman Nathan Haynes, MSU’s heavyweight, dropped both of his matches to finish the year with a 10-22 mark.
The Mavericks head to Kearney, Neb., March 11-12 to take part in the NCAA Division II National Championships.
