LA CROSSE, Wis. – St. Olaf’s Ryan Timmerman (141) and Joey Waples (165) each went 2-1 in their first three bouts at the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday to earn All-America honors.
Timmerman opened with a 4-3 win over Wartburg’s Matt Kelly to set up a quarterfinal bout with Ithaca’s Jeremy Stierly, the second seed in the weight class. Stierly won an 8-1 decision to send Timmerman to the consolation bracket.
Timmerman then pinned North Central’s Andrew Zoback at the 4:14 mark to stay alive and assure a top-eight finish.
Waples lost his opener, a 14-4 major decision to Vincent Renaut of Merchant Marine. Waples then rebounded with a 5-3 win over Ithaca’s Nicholas Sanko and Heidelberg’s Matt Curly. The win over Curly was a 12-10 decision in triple overtime.
Both Timmerman and Waples will wrestle at least twice more tomorrow.
