Augustana team, seven individuals named Division II All-Academic

MANHEIM, Pa. – The Augustana wrestling team owned the fifth highest grade-point average in the country and had seven individuals named to the 2010-11 NCAA Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team, the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association announced this week.

As a team, the Vikings have a GPA of 3.292.

To be named to the Division II All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.0, be in his second year at his school, be a varsity member or key reserve and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation submitted on his behalf.

Marcus Edgington (3.77/physics), Nate Herda 3.13/exercise science), Cody Lensing (3.96/biochemistry) and Jay Sherer (3.48/biology) were named to All-Academic first team, Al Meger (3.04/business administration) earned second team honors and Tom Davies (3.35/biology) and Sam Fischenich(3.63/business administration) picked up honorable mention accolades.

Augustana and Gannon had the highest number of wrestlers on the first team with four each.

Sherer was named to the first team for the fourth time in his career–one of only four on this season’s team to accomplish such a feat.

Augustana finished third and had seven All-America honorees at this past weekend’s NCAA Championship in Kearney, Neb. The Vikings finished the dual season with a record of 14-2 and were the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champions with a flawless 7-0 conference campaign.
