The 2011 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features thirty-two* first-team members, thirty second-team members, thirty third-team members, and twenty-three honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement, and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receives two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to junior Scott West wrestler Michael Kroells. Michael capped his high school career with the Class AA 215-pound state title, a perfect 47-0 record, and a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Not far behind Kroells is senior Jordan Kingsley of Apple Valley and senior Sebastian Gardner of Monticello.
Everyone on the first team placed fourth or higher at state this year, including fourteen champions and seven runners-up. First-team members have an average season win percentage of 94%, an average of just over forty-one season wins, and an average GPA of 3.82.
Six nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Kroells of Scott West, Zack Gawboy of Maple Grove, Cory Hansen of Albert Lea Area, Adam Jackson of Rosemount, Charlie Leighton of Trinity at River Ridge, and Mark Volker of Cambridge-Isanti.
Five nominees finished as undefeated 2011 state champions and all five made our first or second team: Kroells of Scott West, Curt Maas of Medford, Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, Tyler Mergen of Monticello, and Clint Poster of Pierz.
Repeat Guillotine first-team members are Jacoby Bergeron of Thief River Falls/Goodridge, Garret Garness of Kasson-Mantorville, Jordan Kingsley of Apple Valley, Tyler Mergen of Monticello, Clint Poster of Pierz, and Hayden Zillmer of Crosby-Ironton.
Apple Valley had the most first, second, and third-team members with five. New London-Spicer was next with four.
Six teams had three first, second, and third-team members: Cambridge-Isanti, Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley, Hastings, Maple Grove, Minneota, and Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

Michael Kroells, 215 lbs.
Scott West, 11th
Michael won the Class AA title this year at 215 pounds. He was runner-up at 189-pounds as a sophomore. Michael also placed sixth at 189 pounds as a freshman. Michael finished his season undefeated with 47 wins. His current career record is 133-28. Michael’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2011 MWCA Academic All-State, 2009 Clash All-Tournament Team, 2010 Belle Plaine HS ExCEL Award Nominee, wrestling captain, 2010 Christmas Tournament champion, 2010 Rumble on the Red champion, 2010 football captain, all-conference football two years, and student council. Future plans are to wrestle at a Division I school and major in math and science. Michael’s parents are Lori Kroells, Larry Kroells and Laura Cunningham and his coaches are Darren Ripley and Jerold Stauffacher.

Apple Valley, 12th
Jordan is a two-time state entrant winning the 112-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed third at 103 pounds as a junior. Jordan had a season record of 45-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 136-13 (91.3 win %). Jordan’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include two-time All-Academic Section, two-time MWCA All-Academic, Cadet Freestyle All-American, Junior Freestyle All-American, and 2010 Guillotine Academic All-State. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota to wrestle and also major in pharmacy. Jordan’s parents are Roger and Sheila and his coach is Jim Jackson.
Sebastian Gardner, 171 lbs.
Monticello, 12th
Sebastian is a two-time state entrant winning the Class AA title this year. He placed second at 171 pounds as a junior. Sebastian had an impressive season record of 44-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 127-31. Sebastian’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include two-year captain, MWCA All-Academic, Kare 11 Academic All-Star, January 2011 Monticello Rotary Student of the Month, and 9th-11th All-Conference Academics. Future plans are to attend Concordia to wrestle and major in biology. Sebastian’s parents are Jeffrey and Sally and his coach is Andy Zigan.
Jacob Braaten, 112 lbs.
Minnewaska Area, 12th
Jacob won the Class A title this year at 112 pounds. He is a two-time state entrant. Jacob had a season record of 39-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 111-32. Jacob’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include ten tournament championships, three-time all-conference, two-time West Central Conference South champion, and a two-time all-state nominee for soccer. Jacob is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend UW-Superior and play soccer. Jacob’s parents are Lee and Donna and his coach is Wes Tessman.
Tyler Mergen, 152 lbs.
Monticello, 12th
Tyler is a two-time state champion. He won the 152-pound Class AA title this year and the 145-pound title as a junior. Tyler finished his season undefeated with 46 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 176-17 (91.2 win %). Tyler’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include four-time Mississippi 8 All-Conference, three-time Monticello Most Valuable Wrestler, FloNationals All-American, 2010 Guillotine Academic All-State, and three-time Mental Aerobics Wrestling Tournament champion. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend school and wrestle for the U.S. Air Force Academy. Tyler’s parents are Paula and David and his coach is Andy Zigan.
Clint Poster, 140 lbs.
Pierz, 12th
Clint is a two-time state champion and a four-time placewinner. He won the 140-pound Class A title this year and the 103-pound title as an eighth-grader. Clint also placed third at 135 pounds as a junior and sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Clint finished his season undefeated with 44 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 225-27. Clint’s GPA is 3.76. Honors and achievements include Pierz record holder for wins (225) and pins (124), four-time team MVP, 2010 Guillotine Academic All-State, and Pierz AAA winner (Arts, Academics, Athletics). Future plans are to attend St. Cloud State while wrestling and majoring in physical education. Clint’s parents are Kevin and Karen and his coach is Simon Waltman.
Adam Jackson, 152 lbs.
Rosemount, 11th
Adam was the Class AAA 152-pound runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Adam had a season record of 38-3 (all losses to Destin McCauley). His current career record is 73-17. Adam’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include acceptance into the West Point Academy Summer Leadership Program; all-conference in wrestling; team MVP, Academic Achiever, and Hardest Worker Awards; “Iron Man” winner at Concordia Team Camp; Spanish Honor Society; Honors Ranking #1 out of 565. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college. Adam’s parents are Joel and Nikki and his coach is Brett Larson.
Garret Garness, 135 lbs.
Kasson-Mantorville, 12th
Garret is a three-time state finalist. He won the 103-pound Class AA title as an eighth-grader. Garret was runner-up at 130 pounds as a junior and at 125 pounds as a sophomore. He also placed third at 135 pounds this season. Garret had a season record of 48-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 221-35. Garret’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include team career wins leader, three-time captain, 101 career pins, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2010 first team Guillotine Academic All-State, student council, D.A.R.E. Role Model, and LINK Crew Leader (school-based organization). Garret is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Ohio University in the fall majoring in sports administration while participating on the wrestling team. Garret’s parents are Ken and Ginny and his coach is Jon Buchanan.

Curt is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time state entrant. He won the 145-pound Class A title this year and the 135-pound title as a sophomore. Curt was runner-up at 125 pounds as a freshman. Curt finished his season undefeated with 37 wins. His current career record is 149-23. Curt’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include 2010 NHSCA Sophomore National Championships runner-up, four-time all-conference, and team captain. Future plans are to attend a four-year university and wrestle. Curt’s parents are Daniel and Stacy and his coach is Dennis Whitman.

Brett is a two-time state finalist, a three-time placer, and a four-time state entrant. He was the Class A 152-pound runner-up this year as a junior and the 140-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He also placed sixth at 119 pounds as a freshman. Brett had an impressive season record of 42-1. His current career record is 157-36. Brett’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State, 2011 NHSCA Junior National Championships runner-up, 2010 NHSCA Sophomore National Championships 4th place, and 2010 Fargo Cadet Freestyle All-American (3rd). Future plans are to wrestle in college. Brett’s parents are David and Robyn and his coach is Scott Wilson.
Stephen Erlandson, 160 lbs.

Stephen is a two-time state finalist and a three-time placer. He was the Class A 160-pound runner-up this year as a junior and the 160-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He also placed sixth at 152 pounds as a sophomore. Stephen had an impressive season record of 38-2. His current career record is 136-25. Stephen’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include two-time Heart of Lakes Conference champion, student council, two-time all-conference in football, HOL Conference MVP in football, and all-state honorable mention in football. Stephen is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college, major in physical therapy, and minor in coaching. Stephen’s parents are Eric and Patti and his coach is Pat Vold.

Klinton was the Class A 130-pound runner-up this year. He is a two-time state entrant. Klinton had a season record of 38-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 160-67. Klinton’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include team captain, member of the 2008 and 2009 MWCA Academic state championship team, 103 career falls, and team Most Valuable Wrestler for 2011. Klinton is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Ridgewater College and wrestle. Klinton’s parents are Kim and Kevin and his coach is Wes Haglund.

Oakley is a two-time state entrant, winning the 125-pound Class A title this year. He placed fourth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Oakley had a season record of 41-5. His current career record is 135-19. Oakley’s GPA is 3.69. Honors and achievements include three-time HVL All-Conference and 2011 MWCA Academic All-State. Future plans are to work toward winning a second state title and look at college options following high school. Oakley’s parents are Heather Majerus and Rob McLain and his coach is Matt Ryan.

Jamie is a three-time state entrant placing second at 140 pounds this year in Class AA. Jamie had a season record of 31-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 133-30. Jamie’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include four-time state team participant in cross country, school’s AAA Award winner, all-conference in cross country and track, six-year letter winner in wrestling, currently #1 in class, MN Heartland Economics Challenge state level participant, and top 10% placer at St. Cloud State math contest (10th grade). Future plans are to attend college to pursue a career in computer science or computer engineering. Possible schools include U of Wisconsin, Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and the University of Southern California. Jamie’s parents are Robin and Kim and his coach is Caleb Watson.

Adam is a three-time state entrant placing third at 189 pounds this year in Class A. Adam had a season record of 43-6. His current career record is 113-39. Adam’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include 2010 USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle National Championships runner-up, member of the 2010 Minnesota Storm Cadet freestyle and Greco-Roman National Duals national championship teams, Clash National Duals Scholar Athlete, MWCA Academic All-State, 2009 state champions of Class A football, 2010 and 2011 football captain, and student council vice president. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle or play football at a four-year college. Adam’s parents are Roberta and Scott and his coach is Joel Skillings.

Josh is a two-time state entrant placing third at heavyweight this year in Class A. Josh had a season record of 45-3. His current career record is 107-33. Josh’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference, two-time academic all-conference, captain for next season, 2009 state champions of Class A football, all-conference academic team for football, and named football captain for next season Josh’s parents are Mark and Cathy and his coach is Joel Skillings.

Dustin was the Class A 140-pound runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Dustin had an impressive season record of 36-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 142-45. Dustin’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, four-time academic all-conference, two-time team Hardest Worker Award, team MVP, all-conference in baseball, all-conference honorable mention in football. Dustin is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend and wrestle at South Dakota State and major in civil or ag engineering. Dustin’s parents are Dan and Janet and his coach is Marcus Eytcheson.

Brandon is a three-time state champion. He won the 140-pound Class AAA title this year, the 135-pound title as a sophomore, and the 125-pound title as a freshman. Brandon had an impressive season record of 46-2. His current career record is 169-6 (96.6 win %). Brandon’s GPA is 3.57. Honors and achievements include 2011 MWCA Academic All-State, three-time all conference academic team, two-time Clash all-tournament team, and two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and become a chiropractor. Brandon’s parents are Roger and Sheila and his coach is Jim Jackson.

Matt is a state champion, a four-time finalist, and a five-time placewinner. He won the 130-pound Class AA title this year. Matt was runner-up at 125 pounds as a junior, at 119 pounds as a sophomore, and at 103 pounds as a freshman. He also placed third at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Matt had an impressive season record of 40-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 208-31. Matt’s GPA is 3.59. Honors and achievements include two-time academic all-state, 2010 USA Wrestling folkstyle and freestyle All-American, 2010 FloNationals All-American, and 2011 Mississippi 8 Conference All-Academic. Tony is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 119-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 103 pounds as a sophomore. Tony had a season record of 42-7. Honors and achievements include 2009 MN Christmas Tournament runner-up, 2010 MN Christmas Tournament third place, 2010 Clash 6-0 Club, two-time team scholar-athlete, 2009 team most improved, and 2009 team hardest worker. Tony is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and major in computer science or engineering. Alex is a three-time state entrant winning the 160-pound Class A title this year. He placed fifth at 145 pounds as a junior. Alex had an impressive season record of 35-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 128-46. Alex’s GPA is 3.63. Honors and achievements include KNUJ Co-Wrestler of the Year, New Ulm Journal All-Area Wrestler of the Year, KEYC Prep Athlete of the Week, Team MVP, two-time Valley All-Conference, and three-year team captain. Future plans are joining the National Guard and pursuing law enforcement at Alexandria Technical and Community College. Alex’s parents are Mark and Kim and his coach is Darren Gifferson.

Jacoby is a three-time state placer winning the Class AA 103-pound title as a sophomore. He placed fourth at 119 pounds this season and fifth at 112 pounds as a junior. Jacoby had a season record of 46-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 147-11 (93 win %). Jacoby’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include seven-time USA Wrestling All-American, five-time Team MN/USA Wrestler, 2009 Western Junior Regional champion, 2010 Junior Greco-Roman state champion, and 2010 Northern Plains freestyle champion. Jacoby is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are wrestling at Concordia and studying something in the medical field. Jacoby’s parents are Dale and Coleen and his coach is Kenny Geiser.
Zach Rohr, 145 lbs.

Zach is a one-time state champion and a five-time placewinner. He won the 145-pound Class AAA title this year and placed second at 140-pounds as a junior. Zach also placed fourth at 135 pounds as a sophomore, fifth at 112 pounds as a freshman, and sixth at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Zach had a season record of 38-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 176-49. Zach’s GPA is 3.54. Honors and achievements include five-time all-state and all-conference, Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, two-time captain, and three-time All-American. Future plans are to wrestle on scholarship at Ohio University and become a teacher and coach. Zach’s parents are Jim and Shelly and his coach is Josh McLay.

Hayden is a three-time state champion. He won the 130-pound Class A title this year, the 112-pound title as a junior, and the 103-pound title as a sophomore. Hayden had an impressive season record of 43-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 166-13 (92.7 win %). Hayden’s GPA is 3.49. Honors and achievements include three-time Big Bear Tournament champion, Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, eight-time MN Triple Crown winner, five-time USA Wrestling cadet national champion, USA Wrestling Cadet Triple Crown, USA Wrestling junior folkstyle national champion, 2010 USA Wrestling junior Greco-Roman All-American, and 2010 Brute Adidas national champion. Future plans are to attend North Dakota State and continue wrestling. Hayden’s parents are Mary and Nick and his coach is Champ Hesch.

Ryan is a two-time state entrant placing fourth at 171 pounds this year in Class A. Ryan had a season record of 41-7. He ended his high school career with a record of 110-60. Ryan’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include team captain, 2010 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, 2011 all-conference, 2010 team Most Improved Wrestler, three-time state team tournament participant, 2010 football captain, all-conference in football, track letter winner, student council president, and class president. Ryan is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend either North Dakota State or South Dakota State and study mechanical engineering. Ryan’s parents are Mark and Cleone and his coach is Dan Rouser.

Matt is a three-time state champion and a four-time finalist. He won the 135-pound Class AAA title this year, the 125-pound title as a junior, and the 119-pound title as a sophomore. Matt was also runner-up at 112 pounds as a freshman. Matt had a season record of 45-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 174-14 (92.6 win %). Matt’s GPA is 3.41. Honors and achievements include 2011 MWCA Mr. Minnesota Wrestler, two-time section all-academic, 2011 all-conference, and 4.0 GPA last trimester during wrestling season – classes included physics, calculus, and pre-college engineering. Future plans are to wrestle for the University of Wisconsin. Matt’s parents are Tom and Darla and his coach is Jim Jackson.

Bronson is a three-time state champion, a four-time finalist, and a five-time placewinner. He won the 135-pound Class A title this year, the 125-pound title as a junior, and the 119-pound title as a sophomore. Bronson also placed second at 103 pounds as a freshman and fourth at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Bronson had a season record of 36-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 215-39. Bronson’s GPA is 3.5. Honors and achievements include fifth place at the 2010 Super 32 Challenge Tournament, and honor roll 9th-12th grades. Future plans are to wrestle at South Dakota State, major in agricultural business, and eventually take over his dad’s farming operation. Bronson’s parents are Tim and Tammy and his coach is Randy Baker.

Joe placed fourth at state this year at 152 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Joe had an impressive season record of 39-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 142-39. Joe’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include South Central Conference champion, two-time all-conference in football, all-area in football, and school Peer Helping program. Future plans are to play football in college (undecided) and possibly wrestle. Joe’s parents are Mark and Mary and his coach is Randy Wirtjes.

He also placed sixth at 145 pounds as a junior, fifth at 112 pounds as a freshman, and third at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Grant had a season record of 44-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 190-35. Grant’s GPA is 3.85. Honors and achievements include all-academic 10th grade, six-year letter winner, school’s season win record (44) and school’s career wins record (190).
