St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University Wrestling program held its third annual alumni reunion last Saturday, June 25, in the St. Cloud area. Mark ‘76 and Anita ‘75 Bauerly hosted this summer’s reunion at Big Fish Lake.
“We had a great turnout at the alumni gathering and it was neat to see former wrestlers from St. Cloud State,” said SCSU’s head wrestling coach Steve Costanzo. “Some of the individuals present hadn’t seen each other in over 30 years.”
Nearly 50 guests partook in the wrestling alumni event. The president of St. Cloud State, Dr. Earl H. Potter III, was in attendance to help celebrate the success of the 2010-11 Husky team, which placed second at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships this past March. President Potter also provided the alumni with an update on the University and campus initiatives.
“I’d like to extend a special thank you to the Bauerly’s for their generous hospitality,” added Costanzo, who was named the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coach of the Year. “Our alumni involvement continues to get stronger every year and the alumni are truly our foundation to the future of Husky Wrestling.”
In 2010-11, SCSU enjoyed one of its best seasons in team history. The Huskies placed second in the nation at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships, won the 2011 NCAA Division II Super Region #3 title and set a team record with a 19-2 dual meet record in 2010-11. Senior wrestler John Sundgren won a national title at 157-pounds for the Huskies.
The second place national finish was the highest national tournament finish for the Huskies in team history, and the Huskies also posted a solid third place finish at the elite NWCA National Duals in 2011.
