FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team will head to Minneapolis for the season-opening dual against No. 4 Minnesota on Sunday, Nov. 27. Action will begin at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion. It will be the first trip back for first year Bison head coach Roger Kish and assistant Manny Rivera, who both wrestled for and graduated from Minnesota. Live video will be available for a fee through Gopher All-Access.
Matching up with the Gophers
Minnesota leads the all-time series with North Dakota State, 15-2, including a 35-9 win at the Northern Quad last season. Several Minnesota-North Dakota State bouts also took place at the Bison Open on Nov. 12. In the 125 pound final, No. 2 Zach Sanders won a 16-7 major decision over No. 9 Trent Sprenkle. In the 157 pound final, then-No. 8 Jake Deitchler won a 7-5 overtime decision over Steven Monk. At 184 pounds, then-No. 6 Kevin Steinhaus won a 10-2 major decision over Mac Stoll in the final.
The No. 4 Golden Gophers come into the weekend with a 1-1 record after knocking off the defending national champion Penn State, 23-14. Minnesota opened the dual season with a 21-16 loss to Cornell. Members of the Gopher team are ranked in all 10 weight classes in the latest InterMat rankings, including four returning All-Americans in the top five. Senior Zach Sanders is No. 2 at 125 pounds, sophomore Kevin Steinhaus is No. 5 at 184 pounds, senior Sonny Yohn is No. 3 at 197 pounds and sophomore Tony Nelson is No. 3 at heavyweight.
Monk named wrestler of the week
Sophomore Steven Monk was named the Western Wrestling Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week after winning the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open over the weekend, going 4-0 en route to the title. Monk upset conference foe No. 19 David Bonin of Northern Iowa in the final. He shared the award with Wyoming’s Kasey Garnhart.
Sprenkle, Monk represent NDSU in InterMat rankings
North Dakota State senior Trent Sprenkle is ranked No. 7 at 125 pounds and sophomore Steven Monk is No. 17 at 157 pounds in the latest version of the InterMat rankings released Nov. 22. Sprenkle moved up from No. 8 in last week’s rankings despite not competing this weekend. He is currently 7-1 this season. Sprenkle is also No. 8 in the D1CollegeWrestling.com rankings and No. 7 in WIN Magazine’s rankings. Monk enters the InterMat rankings for the first time in his career. Monk is also No. 24 in the D1CollegeWrestling.com poll and No. 15 in WIN Magazine’s rankings.
Knutson, Monk win titles at Finn Grinaker Cobber Open
Sophomore Steven Monk and freshman Evan Knutson won gold division titles to lead the North Dakota State wrestling team at the Cobber Open on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Bison also had seven other wrestlers place in the top six at the meet. In the maroon division, freshmen Hayden Zillmer (149), Alex Andel (Hwt) and Kody Sorenson (184) won titles competing as unattached wrestlers.
