The Golden Gophers are set to open the 2011-12 season at the 41st annual Bison Open. This will mark the seventh consecutive season that the Gophers have opened up at the Bison Open. Matches are set to get underway at 10 a.m. CST.
In the preseason, the Gophers have been tabbed as the No.4 team in the nation by the USA Today/NWCA and InterMat Polls. Defending National Champion Penn State sits at the top at No.1, followed by Iowa at No.2, Oklahoma State at No.3 and Cornell rounds out the top five at No.5.
InterMat’s Team Tournament-Strength Rankings have the Gophers at No. 3 behind Penn State at No.2 and Iowa at No. 1.
LAST SEASON WRAP-UP
The Gophers are coming off a season where they posted a 15-4-1 overall record and a 6-1-1 mark in Big Ten duals. Minnesota finished in third place in the Big Ten regular season as well as third at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships the Gophers finished in seventh.
TOUGH WEEKEND TO FOLLOW
Next weekend the Gophers will travel to the east coast to take on No. 5 Cornell on Thursday Nov. 18 and the defending national champions, No. 1 Penn State on Sunday Nov. 20. The match against the Nittany Lions will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network at 11 a.m. CST.

GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Minnesota’s coaching staff is led by the legend himself J Robinson, who enters his 26th season at the helm. Long time assistant Joe Russell left over the summer to take the head coaching job at George Mason University. Now Brandon Eggum has moved up to Head Assistant Coach, while Luke Becker is a full-time assistant.
SANDERS LOOKING TO MOVE UP THE CHARTS
Senior All-American Zach Sanders currently sits at No. 35 on the all-time career wins list for the Gophers. If Sanders can pick up five wins at the Bison Open, he could move up five spots to No. 30.
FOUR ALL-AMERICANS TABBED AS CAPTAINS FOR 2011-12
The four returning All-Americans from last season have been named as team captains for the 2011-12 season. Sanders is joined by fellow senior Sonny Yohn and sophomores Kevin Steinhaus and Tony Nelson to guide the team. At the NCAA Championships last season Sanders finished 5th (125 lbs.), Yohn 7th (197 lbs.), Steinhaus 8th (184 lbs.) and Nelson 7th (Hwt.)
