Minneapolis, Minn. – Freshman Drew Lexvold won the 133-lb class to set the tone for Minnesota State University at the Augsburg Open. MSU had eight wrestlers finish with top-five finishes in their respective weight class.
After receiving a first round bye, Lexvold won by a fall over Cody Madsen (Augsburg) at the 1:33 mark. In the semifinals Lexvold won in overtime against Tom Kuehn (Augsburg) before winning by another fall over Chad Henle (St. Johns) at the 1:54 mark.
Senior Brian Reisenauer and sophomore David Demo finished in second and third-place respectively in the 125-lb class. Reisenauer defeated Tanner Schmidt and Nick Scheffert (Luther) by 2-1 and 3-1 decisions. The senior went on to defeat Bo Bettinson (Waldorf) by a fall at 1:37 before being defeated by Austin Mogg (Buena Vista) by a 13-1 major decision in the championship. Demo defeated Ben Seglin (Waldorf) by a 9-1 major decision and Chris Paulus (Upper Iowa) by a 6-2 decision. The sophomore lost to Mogg, the eventual champion, in a 5-2 decision. Demo regrouped to beat Bettinson in the third-place match.
Junior 149-lb Jesse Westphal won three consecutive decisions before falling in the championship round. Westphal defeated Ryan Seidler (Eau Claire) 6-5, Taylor Reicks 11-5, and Nathan Lexvold (Augsburg) 6-1. The junior was defeated by a fall at 3:50 by Tony Valek (Augsburg).
Seniors Tel Todd and John Makabe finished in fourth and fifth-place respectively for MSU in the 165-lb class. Todd won his first two matched, one by a fall of (Cameron Childs (Waldorf) at the 4:26 mark and one by a 6-1 decision over Jared Wildeboer (Morningside). Todd lost his next two matches to eventual champion Blake Sorenson (Upper Iowa) and Brandon Bahr (Augsburg). Makabe won an 8-3 decision against Scott Gifford (La Crosse) before losing a 7-6 decision to runner-up Rashad Moss (Waldorf). Makabe went on to win his next two matches, one of which was a major decision win, en route to a fifth-place finish.
Junior Robby Fisher defeated Alex Peck (St. Johns) by an 8-2 decision before falling to Garret Lambrecht (Morningside) by an 8-5 decision. Fisher went on to win his next to matches by a 17-2 tech fall against Josiah Simburger (Northwestern) and a 17-2 major decision win against Kyle Windquist (Luther)
Sophomore Brendan Eichmann received a first-round bye and then defeated Jarid Groth (Luther) by a 13-6 decision. Eichmann then lost a 3-2 decision to eventual runner-up Wade Gobin (Upper Iowa). The sophomore rebounded to defeated Josh Kohler (Augsburg) in a 5-1 decision to finish in third-place.
MSU will hit the mats again on December 10 at the Husky Open hosted by St. Cloud University.
