Decorah, Iowa – Minnesota State took to the mat Saturday afternoon at the Luther College Open as they had 14 wrestlers in competition. Nine Mavericks placed in the 20-team competition.
Freshman #Drew Lexvold# paced MSU with a runner-up finish in the 133-lb weight class. After an opening round bye, Lexvold defeated Nathan Yoshimura (Wartburg) by an 18-0 tech fall. Lexvold continued on to win by a 6-4 decision against Adam Sheley (UWL), before falling to Matt Kelliher (Wisconsin) by an 11-8 decision in the championship match.
Seniors #Tel Todd# and #John Makabe# finished in second and third-place respectively in the 165-lb weight class. After a first round bye, Todd defeated Eric Moreno (Luther) by a 3-2 decision and then Scott Gifford (UWL) by a 12-6 decision. Todd fell to the same wrestler that defeated Makabe in the opening round, Joey Hambleton (Cornell) by an 8-6 decision in the championship match. Following a 17-2 tech fall to Hambleton and a second round bye, Makabe responded by winning four straight matches en route to earning a third-place finish. Included in the four matches was a 14-7 decision, a tech fall and two falls, including one in the championship match against Gifford at 2:04.
Following a first round bye, senior #Brian Reisenauer# was defeated by Kyle Pedretti (Upper Iowa) by a 14-6 decision. Following the loss, Reisenauer defeated Jered Kemp (RCTC) in a 7-3 decision. Reisenauer claimed third-place in the 125-lb class after defeating Jordan Ng (Cornell) in a 5-2 decision. After two losses, sophomore #David Demo# received a bye en route to a seventh-place finish in the same weight class.
Juniors #Jesse Westphal# and #Robby Fisher# finished in third and fifth-place respectively in the 149-lb weight class. Westphal defeated Dylan Shafer (UWL) in an 8-3 decision and Taylor Reicks in an 11-2 major decision before falling to eventual champion Brady Schrupp (UWL) in the quarterfinals. Westphal rebounded to defeat Seth Hogan (UWL) to garner third-place honors. Schrupp also defeated Fisher by a fall at 6:26. Fisher went on to defeat three of his next four opponents to end the day.
Senior #Derek Hahn# went 2-3 with a bye on the day to finish in sixth-place. Hahn had one fall and one decision in his two wins.
#Mike Knutson# finished in fifth-place in the 184-lb freshman weight class.
MSU will be in competition on 11/19 at the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis, Minn.
