Augsburg’s Valek wins title at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Tony Valek (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) dominated his weight class with four bonus-point victories, leading the Augsburg College wrestling team at the St. Cloud State University Holiday Inn Husky Open on Saturday at Halenbeck Hall.

Valek claimed two major-decision wins, a technical fall and a pin – three wins coming over upper-division wrestlers – in winning his weight class. He scored an 11-0, major-decision win over Thomas Giaimo of Division I Minnesota in the opening match, a 1:10 pin of Rochester Community College’s Holton Lubinski in the second round, a 15-0, technical-fall win over Thomas Allen of Minnesota State Mankato in the semifinals and an 8-0 win over MSU Mankato’s Jesse Westphal in the finals.

The top-ranked wrestler in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings at 149 pounds, Valek improved to 13-0 on the season, with bonus-point wins in 11 of those matches.

Augsburg had nine individual placewinners at the Husky Open, including two runners-up. At heavyweight, Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) reached the finals with a major decision and two pins – including a 4:41 pin of Matt Wyss of Iowa Lakes Community College, the No. 10-ranked wrestler in the junior college national rankings. He fell to Jake Kahnke of St. Cloud State, the top-ranked wrestler in Division II, in the finals. Johnson, the No. 2-ranked heavyweight in Division III, is now 11-1 on the season.

At 125, Chad Bartschenfeld (FY, Amery, Wis.) reached the finals with two victories, with his lone loss coming to Minnesota’s Jordan Kingsley in the finals. Bartschenfeld is now 5-2 on the season.

Boyd Suparat (JR, North Branch, Minn.) went 3-1 to finish third at 133 pounds, improving to 9-4 on the season.

Augsburg had three fourth-place finishers – No. 8-ranked Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.) at 197, Brandon Bahr (SR, Bemidji, Minn.) at 165 and Pat Fletcher (SR, Shelton, Neb.) at heavyweight.

Placing sixth for the Auggies were Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) at 174 and Matt Hechsel (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.) at 184.

WARTBURG DICK WALKER INVITATIONAL BRACKETS

Augsburg’s White Team (junior varsity) competed at the Wartburg (Iowa) Dick Walker Invitational in Waverly, Iowa, on Saturday, claiming five placewinners. Tommy Teigen (SO, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) placed fourth at 165, as did Tony Castro (SO, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) at 174. Ryan Cook (SO, Wetumpka, Ala.) placed fifth at 141, as did Noel Sweeney (SO, Grand Rapids, Minn.) at 165. Rashad Kennedy (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) placed sixth at 149.

Saturday’s events were the last for Augsburg until the holiday break. Augsburg will compete at the Citrus Open tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Dec. 29-30.
