No. 2 Cowboys Hand No. 3 Gophers Second Loss of the Season

The No. 3 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers were defeated this afternoon by the No.2 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, by a score of 23-14.

Minnesota (3-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) picked up its first win of the day from Nick Dardanes, who upset No. 7 ranked Josh Kindig 14-12 in overtime. Dardanes (ranked 19th) wore down Kindig midway through the second period and was the more physical and dominate wrestler of the match. Kindig was out of gas at the end of the third period (tied 12-12) and Dardanes used that to his advantage and quickly scored the takedown in the overtime period.

The Gophers would pick up two jaw dropping wins from the Yohn brothers (Cody and Sonny) later on. Cody, ranked No. 9 at 165 lbs. took down No. 13 ranked Dallas Bailey by a 12-1 major decision victory.

Sonny would step onto the mat three matches later against No. 3 ranked Cayle Byers. Both were scoreless through the first period before Yohn scored the escape point, after starting the second period down. Byers would record the two-point takedown late in the second to go up 2-1 heading into the final period. The two would battle back and forth all the way down to the wire, before Yohn would score a takedown just inside the circle with four seconds remaining, to pick up the 3-2 decision.

No. 2 ranked Zach Sanders would close out the afternoon with a 15-7 major decision over No. 13 ranked Ladd Rupp. Sanders could move up to the top spot in the country at 125 lbs. after Illinois freshman Jess Delgado (ranked ninth) overcame a 6-2 deficit to upset Iowa’s top-rated Matt McDonough, 11-7 in overtime Friday night.

Minnesota will now return home after the weekend road trip and host Iowa State on Friday Dec. 9 at 7:30, inside Williams Arena. It is the only dual schedule to be held inside Williams Arena this year and admission is just $1. Make sure to come on out to “Burst the Barn” this coming Friday.
