SMSU wins battle of the Mustangs with 26-12 over Morningside College

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team improved to 2-0 on the season after picking up a 26-12 dual victory over Morningside College (Iowa), who is ranked No. 9 in the NAIA national rankings, on Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa. Morningside falls to 1-1 in dual meets on the season.

Southwest Minnesota State jumped out to an early lead taking the first five bouts of the evening. Travis Borchert (125 pounds) gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead picking up an 8-5 decision over Kory Kistner. Justin Reinsma pushed SMSU’s lead to 8-0 earning a 20-5 technical fall over Garret Lambercht in the 133-pound bout.

Ethan Hildebrandt grabbed six more points for SMSU pinning Jake McManigal at 4:29 putting SMSU ahead 14-0. SMSU took a 17-0 lead over Morningside when Codie Lane won a 7-6 decision over Taylor Phipps. Blaine Miller (157 pounds) gained three team points for the Mustangs earning a 4-2 decision over Blayne Richards to give SMSU a 20-0 lead.

Morningside would go on to win the next three bouts to make the score 20-12 in favor of SMSU.

Andre Rodas won a 5-4 decision over Andrew Anthofer in the 197-pound bout to extend SMSU’s lead to 23-12. Cole Wilson then won the heavyweight match 7-5 in overtime to give the Mustangs a 26-12 victory over the Morningside Mustangs.

Southwest Minnesota State continues dual action on Friday night at NCAA Division I South Dakota State University at 7:30 p.m.
