MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Will Keeter (SO, Twin Falls, Idaho) swept through his weight class to lead the Augsburg College wrestling team at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational on Saturday.
Ranked No. 6 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings at 141 pounds, Keeter improved to 19-2 on the season with five victories, including two major decisions, to claim the title. He scored a 10-0, major-decision win over Drew Hinschberger of Coe (Iowa) in the finals.
Keeter was one of five placewinners among the 11 Auggies competing at the Cornell tournament. As a team, Augsburg finished in seventh place with 67.0 points. Augsburg is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA Division III national rankings.
Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.), ranked No. 6 nationally at 197 pounds, scored three straight pins to reach the finals in his weight class before losing to top-ranked Byron Tate of Wartburg (Iowa) in the finals. Baus, who has six pins in his last eight matches and 13 pins on the year, is now 18-5 this season.
Nathan Lexvold (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) went 4-2 — with all four victories coming by pin — to finish third at 149 pounds. Jake Saatzer (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) went 5-1 with a pin and major decision to finish third at 141. Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) went 4-2 to place fourth at 174.
Augsburg sent its White Team (junior varsity) to the Central (Iowa) Invitational. No team scores were kept at the meet. Seven Auggies competed at the meet, led by 141-pounder Alex Johnson (SR, Foxhome, Minn./Breckenridge HS), who finished 4-2 at 141.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (1/17) at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg’s White Team will face Rochester Community and Technical College at 6 p.m., and the Auggie varsity will host Minnesota State University Moorhead at 7 p.m.
