Johnnie Wrestling Ranked Eighth Nationally

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University wrestling moved up one spot to No. 8 in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division lll poll released Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Other members of the NCAA Great Lakes Region listed in the rankings include Augsburg (No. 2), Elmhurst of Illinois (No. 14, down one from 13th) and Concordia-Moorhead (No. 18, down three from 15th).

Senior Dustin Baxter (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) is ranked second nationally at 197 pounds in both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com rankings. He improved to 19-0 on the season with a 7-3 victory over Sean Derry of Augustana (S.D.) on Jan. 14.

Junior Mitch Hagen (Sunburg, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) moved up one spot to No. 5 in the NWCA 184-pound rankings but was unranked by D3wrestle.com. Hagen suffered a close 5-2 defeat to Augustana’s Jayd Docken in the 23-13 dual loss. Down 3-2 with 10 seconds left in the match, Hagen’s desperation shot turned into a takedown for Docken. He is 14-4 on the year.

Senior Matt Pfarr (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) stayed at No. 8 (NWCA) and No. 10 (D3wrestle.com) at 174 pounds, respectively. Pfarr came up just shy of upsetting the fourth-ranked in Division II, Carl Serck, with a 6-4 loss in Collegeville. He is now 12-6 on the season.

Senior Chad Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) is ranked ninth at 133 pounds by D3wrestle.com. He dropped a tough 3-0 decision to Augustana’s Jason Jeremiason, ranked second nationally in Division II. Henle is 14-7 on the season.

Junior Nick Schuler (Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace) was left out of the national polls for the third straight set of rankings. He tallied an 8-0 major decision at 165 pounds in the Augustana dual. He is 17-6 on the season. Twelve of his 17 victories this season are bonus-point wins, including six pins (four major decisions and two technical falls).

Hagen, Schuler, junior Chris Stevermer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and sophomore Ryan Arne (Orono, Minn.) were once again listed as contenders, just outside of the Top 10, in the D3wrestle.com rankings. Stevermer and Arne did not compete for SJU against the Vikings two weeks ago, but boast 16-9 and 13-6 records, respectively.

The Johnnies return to action with a trio of duals this Saturday, Jan. 28 at Augsburg. SJU is scheduled to face No. 18 Concordia-Moorhead (10 a.m.), St. Olaf (noon) and the second-ranked Auggies at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
