Chris Dardanes upset win over second ranked Logan Stieber helps pace Minnesota

The No. 3 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes 24-13 this afternoon at the Sports Pavilion. Minnesota came out winning its first six matches of the afternoon, including Chris Dardanes 5-3 upset win, over No. 2 ranked Logan Stieber.

In the first match after intermission, Dardanes, who came in unranked, took down Stieber in a thrilling 5-3 decision. The crowd of nearly 4,000 erupted as Dardanes scored a late takedown with four seconds left in the match to take the 5-3 lead. The score was tied (3-3) before the takedown and with the victory Minnesota was able to seal the win.

With the victory today, Minnesota improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State falls to 7-2 and 1-2 in the Big Ten. It was the Buckeyes second straight loss this weekend, as they fell to No. 14 Nebraska, 18-16 in Lincoln on Friday night.

Sunday’s action began at 174 lbs. were true freshman Logan Storley defeated fifth ranked Nick Heflin, in a 4-2 decision. It was Storley’s first Big Ten win of his career. Storley battled through an injury early on in the season, but has been putting on a good show for fans lately.

The Gophers would go onto to win its next four matches pretty easily. Kevin Steinhaus picked up an 18-3 technical fall win over Craig Thomas, while Sonny Yohn defeated Andrew Campolattano 5-1.

Tony Nelson scored a 2-0 victory over Peter Capone in the heavyweight division, while No.1 ranked Zach Sanders improved to 17-0 on the season with a 20-10 major decision over Johnni Dijulius.

Cody Yohn closed out the day for the Maroon and Gold with a 5-3 decision over Derek Garcia.

Minnesota will next the road for two Big Ten Dual matches. First up will be a date with the Fighting Illni of Illinois on Friday Jan. 13. The Gophers will turn around and head to West Lafayette, IN to take on the Boilermakers of Purdue on Sunday Jan. 15. Friday’s match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s is scheduled for 1 p.m.
