Gophers Takedown the Badgers 37-3; Minnesota now 5-0 in the Big Ten

The Golden Gophers continued their dominance in the Big Ten conference this afternoon as they crushed Wisconsin 37-3, at the Sports Pavilion. Minnesota won its first five matches against the Badgers including a pin by Dylan Ness over No. 14 Cole Schmitt, with 35 seconds left in the opening period.

With the win today Minnesota is now 8-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Big Ten. The Gophers have control of first place in the conference, after Iowa lost to Ohio State on Friday night 21-9 in Columbus.

The Gophers started out on a high note this afternoon winning their first five matches. Action began at 125 where No. 1 ranked Zach Sanders took care of Austin Hietpas pretty easily, as he picked up a 24-9 tech fall.

Before Ness fall at 149, Minnesota would pick up two major decisions from the Daradanes brothers at 133 and 141. Chris defeated Shane McQuade 14-4 and Nick scored a 14-6 win over Thomas Glenn.

Alec Ortiz would give the crowd of over 3,000 something to cheer about right before the break. Ortiz defeated Shawn Perry in a down-to-the wire 11-9 decision. With Ortiz’s win the Gophers went up 22-0 heading into the intermission.

Logan Storley picked up a 15-0 tech fall win over Frank Cousins and Kevin Steinhaus would pick up more bonus points following Storley, as he scored a 14-3 major decision over Timmy McCall.

Minnesota had Sonny Yohn back in the lineup today at 197 and he had no trouble with the Badgers Jackson Hein winning.

Tony Nelson would close out the afternoon for the Maroon and Gold in fashion, as he scored a 6-1 decision over Cole Tobin.

Minnesota will next host No. 10 Michigan this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion and then head down south to take on rival Iowa on Sunday Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.
