No. 3 Minnesota host No. 11 Michigan, Travel to No. 5 Iowa

Gophers host Wolverines Friday night and travel to face the Hawkeyes on Sunday

The No. 3 Minnesota Gopher wrestling team will host the No. 11 Michigan Wolverines on Friday Jan. 27, inside the Sports Pavilion at 7:30p.m. Minnesota will then head down to take on No. 5 Iowa on Sunday Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. Sunday’s dual at Iowa will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network. Tim Johnson and Jim Gibbons will have the call, while Shane Sparks will be the mat side reporter, from Carver Hawkeye Arena.

LAST TIME OUT

Minnesota stayed perfect on the season in Big Ten action last Sunday with a 37-3 victory over Wisconsin. The Gophers (8-2, 5-0 Big Ten) picked up bonus points in six matches against the Badgers.

A LOOK AT THE WOLVERINES

Michigan is currently 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have seven wrestlers ranked in the top 20 including No. 1 Kellen Russell at 141 lbs. Michigan is coming off a 23-14 victory over Central Michigan this past Sunday.

ALL-TIME AGAINST MICHIGAN

Michigan leads the all-time series against the Gophers 30-27-2. Minnesota has defeated the Wolverines the last two years by a combined score of 52-18.

A LOOK AT THE HAWKEYES

Iowa is coming off back-to-back losses in the Big Ten to Ohio State (21-9) and No. 1 Penn State (22-12), both of which were on the road. The loss to Ohio State was its first in 50 road duals and the first against a Big Ten opponent in 39 duals.

ALL-TIME AGAINST IOWA

The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series against the Gophers 68-25-1 which has dated back to 1921. Minnesota’s last win against Iowa was at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 18 2007, when the Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes 29-13.

WHERE CAN I WATCH IT?

The Big Ten Network will broadcast the dual between No. 3 Minnesota and No. 5 Iowa live at 3:04 p.m. Tim Johnson and Jim Gibbons will have the call, while Shane Sparks will be the sideline reporter.

MATCH OF THE YEAR

The match that wrestling fans around the country have been waiting for all year will take place this Sunday at 125 lbs. No. 1 Zach Sanders will take on No. 2 Matt McDonough will square off for the fifth time in their careers, with McDonough leading the all-time series 4-0.

In this week’s InterMat Rankings, Minnesota has nine ranked wrestlers oppose to the Hawkeyes seven.

Sanders is currently tied for 12th all-time with Willy Short on the Gophers wins list. His overall record is 121-13-0 and he is six wins away from breaking assistant coach Luke Becker’s (126-29-0) all-time record.
