NDSU opens with win over Campbell, falls to No. 9 Missouri at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The North Dakota State wrestling team opened with a 30-9 win over Campbell before dropping a 24-9 decision to No. 9 Missouri in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Duals Friday, Jan. 13. The Bison (2-3) will now face Arizona State, which lost to Old Dominion, 20-19, Saturday at 9 a.m. Central in the consolation quarterfinals.

No. 11 Steven Monk, Tyler Diamond and Mac Stoll all finished the day with 2-0 records for the Bison.

Against Campbell, the Bison came out strong, winning the first five bouts in a row. No. 19 Trent Sprenkle and Justin Solberg earned back-to-back pins at 125 and 133 pounds before Mark Erickson added one of his own at 149 pounds. Campbell won three of the final five matches, but Joe Garner, wrestling up several weight classes at 174, and Stoll both won by decision to keep the Bison in front.

NDSU then took on No. 9 Missouri in the quarterfinals. Sprenkle dropped a close 4-2 match to No. 3 Alan Waters at 125 to open the match and Solberg lost by the same score at 133, but Diamond defeated Nicholas Hucke at 141 by a score of 6-3 and Monk won a 4-1 decision over No. 17 Drake Houdashelt at 157 to keep the team scores close. Halfway through the match, Missouri had a slim 9-6 lead, but the Tigers went on to win four of the final five bouts to advance to the semifinals.
