NDSU Wrestling Upset Bid Falls Short in 20-13 Loss to No. 17 Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 17 Oregon State defeated the North Dakota State wrestling team, 20-13, on Sunday, Jan. 22 at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. The Bison lost their third straight dual and fall to 4-6 on the year.
Trent Sprenkle gave NDSU an early 6-0 lead after winning a 16-6 major decision over Pat Rollins at 125 pounds. The Beavers then won the next three in a row to take a 10-4 lead.
The Bison battled back as No. 11 Steven Monk defeated No. 18 R.J. Pena at 157 pounds, 9-7, for his second win over a ranked wrestler this weekend. Tyler Johnson followed up with a hard-fought 9-8 win over Joe Lathan at 165 pounds.
After an Oregon State win at 174 pounds, Mac Stoll tied the match at 13-13 after winning a thrilling 9-7 decision over Ty Vinson at 184 pounds. With the score tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation, Stoll scored a takedown in sudden victory overtime to claim the win.
OSU retook the lead after No. 17 Taylor Meeks won a 10-2 major decision over John Gusewelle. The Beavers clinched the win in the final bout of the day as No. 5 heavyweight Clayton Jack won an 8-4 decision over Evan Knutson.
The Bison return to Fargo Friday, Jan. 27 to take on Air Force at 7 p.m. in Western Wrestling Conference action.
