Mustangs cruise to two victories in triangular match on Wednesday
MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State went 2-0 in its own triangular meet earning a 35-3 victory over Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) and a 31-6 win over Waldorf (Iowa) on Wednesday night in Marshall. SMSU improves to 4-1 in dual meets on the season.
Waldorf (2-7) defeated Dakota Wesleyan (2-6) 25-12 in the first match of the triangular.
The Mustangs won nine out of the 10 bouts on its way to victory over Dakota Wesleyan, including three major decisions and a technical fall. The Mustangs got pins from Codie Lane and Jacob Begin against Waldorf to help the Mustangs take a large lead over the Warriors.
Travis Borchert got the Mustangs on the board early picking up a 4-2 decision over Zach Nelson. SMSU extended its lead to 9-0 after Justin Reinsma earned a win by forfeit over Richard Rios.
Ethan Hildebrandt gave the Mustangs a 12-0 lead earning an 8-2 decision over Dusty Paulsen. Codie Lane followed that with a 15-2 major decision over Ray Rickenbach to give SMSU a 16-0 lead over the Tigers. Dakota Wesleyan got on the board when Trever DeVestern earned a 12-5 decision over Josh Anderson in the 157-pound bout.
Jacob Begin (165 pounds) put the Mustangs back into the win column earning a 13-5 major decision over Nick Hutcheson to put SMSU in front 20-3. Trent Molacek gave the Mustangs a 23-3 lead earning an 8-5 decision over Tyler Sarringar at 174 pounds.
Andrew Rodas gave SMSU a 26-3 lead after a 7-1 decision over Kyle Hoisington in the 184-pound bout. Martin Hagen extended SMSU’s lead to 31-3 with a 20-5 technical fall over Shea Klooster. Brian Rodas put the finishing touches on the Tigers with a 16-3 major decision over Eric Gruis.
Waldorf grabbed a 3-0 lead in the match when Bo Bettinson earned an 11-4 decision over Travis Borchert in the 125-pound match. Justin Reinsma was able to tie the match at three squeezing out a 7-6 decision over Jeff Ohnemus at 133 pounds.
Ethen Hildebrandt (141 pounds) then earned a hard-fought 4-2 double overtime decision over Dillon Spates to give SMSU its first lead of the dual at 6-3. Shortly after, Codie Lane extended SMSU’s lead to 12-3 pinning Kenny Pero at 0:58 in the 149-pound bout.
Jeremy Padilla cut SMSU’s lead in half in the 157-pound match earning a 6-3 decision over Josh Anderson. Jacob Begin (165 pounds) quickly regained the lead for the Mustangs pinning Cameron Childs at 1:07 to put SMSU up 18-6.
SMSU continued to add to its lead when Trent Molacek picked up a 9-8 decision over Gabe Vasquez at 174 pounds. Micah Larson followed that with a 15-5 major decision over Travis Mundt giving SMSU a 25-6 lead.
Martin Hagen won a 10-7 decision over Brock Binversie in the 197-pound bout to give SMSU a 28-6 lead. Cole Wilson needed overtime to pick up a 3-2 decision over Jacob Combs to seal SMSU’s 31-6 victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will return to action on Saturday competing in the Western State Duals in Gunnison, Colo. The Mustangs will take on Colorado State-Pueblo at 12 p.m. CST, Colorado Mesa at 2 p.m. CST and host Western State (Colo.) at 4 p.m.
