#1 St. Cloud State Wrestling Scores 28-12 Win at Mary

The number one ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (13-0, 2-0 NSIC) completed a perfect road trip weekend on Sunday, Jan. 15 with a 28-12 win at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.

SCSU opened the meet with a 14-2 major decision victory at 125-pounds by Eric Forde over Mary’s Hunter Menendez. SCSU’s Zach Stewart added to the Huskies’ win total at 133-pounds with an 18-3 technical fall over Mary’s Kyle Larson.

Josh Howk charted a pin for the Huskies at 149-pounds with a victory at 4:12 over Mary’s Tanner Beaman. SCSU pushed its lead to 18-6 with a 4-3 decision by Dan Dick over Mary’s Taylor Nagel at 165-pounds.

Tad Merritt, who is ranked #1 in the nation at 165-pounds, continued to dominate this season with a 4:51 pinfall win against Mary’s John Devito. The victory pushed SCSU’s lead to 24-6. At 197-pounds, SCSU sealed the deal with a 10-1 major decision by Lucas Munkelwitz over Mary’s Kriss McCleary.

The Huskies will continue their 2011-12 season on Jan. 18 with a 7:30 p.m. home match against non-conference rival Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The match will be held in SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall and tickets can be purchased at the gate. As always, all SCSU students are admitted FREE to all regular season SCSU wrestling matches in 2011-12.
