Auggies claim 24-13 win over UWSP

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming wins in six of 10 bouts, the Augsburg College wrestling team scored a 24-13 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a dual meet on Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.

The Auggies, ranked no. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, collected a pin, technical fall and major decision en route to the victory, finishing the dual-meet portion of the season at 10-3. Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked No. 26 nationally, is 7-15 in dual meets this season.

Boyd Suparat (JR, North Branch, Minn.) claimed a pin for the Auggies at 133 pounds, a 5:00 victory over Joe Mileski (SR, Gladstone, Mich.), improving to 17-9 on the season. Augsburg 125-pounder Mike Fuenffinger (FY, Hibbing, Minn.) pulled away from Jordan Poirier (SO, Bloomer, Wis.), outscoring Poirier 8-1 to score a 12-3, major-decision victory.

Tony Valek (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West), the top-ranked wrestler nationally at 149, improved to 25-0 on the season with an 18-1, technical-fall victory over Jamey Simmons (FY, Abbotsford, Wis.). Of his 25 victories this season, 22 are bonus-point wins (11 pins, two technical falls, nine major decisions). Valek claimed two takedowns, five near-falls and a reversal, building 4:00 of riding time en route to the win.

No. 1-ranked heavyweight Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./DeSoto HS) improved to 28-1 on the season with his 17th straight victory, an 8-3 triumph over Matt Cuadra (JR, Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS). Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.), ranked No. 6 nationally at 197, collected a third-period takedown to rally for a 3-2 victory over Dustin Wozniak (SO, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd HS).

Augsburg 174-pounder Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) scored a takedown in the second sudden-victory overtime period to claim a 4-2 victory over Ryan Conat (JR, New London, Wis.).

Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Jordan Kust (JR, Clintonville, Wis.) rallied from a 4-2, first-period deficit to claim a 7-5 win in the second sudden-victory overtime period over Augsburg No. 5-ranked 141-pounder Will Keeter (SO, Twin Falls, Idaho).

The Pointers’ other victories came at 157, as Ben Strobel (JR, Neenah, Wis.) claimed a 10-2, major-decision win over Nathan Lexvold (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS); at 165, as Jordan Schulte (JR, Mosinee, Wis.) scored a 2-1 win over Tommy Teigen (SO, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS); and at 184, as Andy Borchardt (FY, Edgar, Wis.) claimed a 7-3 win overMatt Hechsel (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.).

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (2/25) at 9 a.m., hosting the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional at Si Melby Hall. Wisconsin-Stevens Point returns to action this Saturday (2/18) at 12 p.m., with a dual meet at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
