Huskies claim second straight Region 3 Title

St. Cloud, Minn. – For the second straight year St. Cloud State claimed the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Wrestling Championship and this time it was captured on their home mat.

The Huskies, ranked #1 by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association, sent four wrestlers to the championship bout and won an individual title at 165 pounds where senior Tad Merritt (Canby) defeated Blake Sorensen of Upper Iowa by major decision, 16-4. It was the second regional title for Merritt.

St. Cloud State advanced seven individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championships, March 9-10 in Pueblo, Colo. The Huskies were the 2011 NCAA runner-up.

St. Cloud State posted 164.0 points and beat out runner-up Upper Iowa with 155.5 points in the 12-team field.
