Northern Iowa wins 12th straight over North Dakota State, 22-18
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The North Dakota State wrestling team fell to Western Wrestling Conference foe Northern Iowa, 22-18, in front of 622 fans at the West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
It was the first conference loss of the year for the Bison, who fall to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the WWC. UNI improves to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the WWC as the Panthers won their 12th straight over the Bison.
No. 19 Trent Sprenkle gave the Bison an early 5-0 lead after a 17-2 technical fall victory over Cruse Aarhus. Sprenkle used two takedowns and a two-point near fall to take a 6-1 lead after one period. He continued his domination in the second period, scoring an escape, takedown and two near falls for a 15-2 lead. A takedown with 45 seconds to go in the third period clinched the technical fall.
At 133 pounds, No. 11 Joe Colon of UNI evened the score at 5-5 with a 17-2 technical fall win over Justin Solberg. Colon tallied three near falls and four takedowns in the win.
Tyler Diamond dropped a close 7-5 decision in sudden victory to Levi Wolfensperger at 141 pounds. Diamond had a 2-1 lead after two periods, but Wolfensperger was able to tie things up on the strength of two takedowns. In sudden victory, Wolfensperger scored the winning takedown with only 13 seconds remaining.
Mark Erickson tied the match at 8-8 after a 3-2 win over Seth Noble at 149 pounds. Erickson scored an escape and a takedown in the second period for his only scoring of the match. Noble scored a late escape in the second period and an early escape in the third, but Erickson was able to hold on for the win.
At 157 pounds, No. 11 Steven Monk was upset by David Bonin, 3-2, as his seven-match win streak came to an end. Bonin took a 2-1 lead after one period and scored what would be the winning escape with 59 seconds to go in the second period. Monk brought it to within one in the third period, but was unable to score any more points.
Tyler Johnson gave the Bison a 14-11 lead at 165 pounds after a first period pin of Riley Banach.
Joe Garner extended the lead to 18-11 at 174 pounds with a 15-7 major decision win over Onni Prestidge. Garner opened with three first period takedowns and kept up the pressure with two more in the second period and two more in the third.
The Panthers came back to win the next three in a row to clinch the dual win. No. 6 Ryan Loder won a 16-1 technical fall over Mac Stoll at 184 pounds and Taylor Kettman gave the Panthers a 19-18 lead with a 7-1 win over John Gusewelle at 197 pounds.
For the second dual in a row, the outcome came down to the heavyweight bout. After a scoreless first period, Evan Knutson and Blayne Beale exchanged early reversals in the second. Beale then earned an escape and a late takedown to take a 5-2 lead into the third. Beale clinched the 7-3 win with a late takedown in the third.
The Bison will continue their WWC road swing next weekend, traveling to Utah Valley Friday and Northern Colorado Sunday.
