Bison’s Stoll earns at-large berth to NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – North Dakota State junior Mac Stoll earned an at-large bid at 184 pounds to the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which was announced by the NCAA Wednesday afternoon. Stoll, who finished third at the NCAA West Regional, will join Trent Sprenkle and Steven Monk, who both earned automatic bids after winning titles at the regional last weekend.

This will be the first year the Bison have sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships since the 2008 season when Eric Hoffman, Jacob Bryce and Ryan Adams represented NDSU.

The NCAA also announced the brackets for each weight class. At 125 pounds, Sprenkle (30-10) will open against George Mason’s Vince Rodriguez (18-9), the CAA runner-up. Monk (32-7) will wrestle MAC champion Donnie Corby (16-9) of Central Michigan at 157 pounds. Stoll (23-12) will take on No. 9 seed Austin Trotman (33-4) of Appalachian State, the reigning Southern Conference champion at 184 pounds.

Sprenkle will be making his second NCAA appearance after earning an at-large berth last year. He advanced to the consolation quarterfinals before bowing out. This will be the first trip to the championships for both Monk and Stoll.

The opening round of competition will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 15 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
