Augsburg wrestling banquet on April 28

MINNEAPOLIS — The Augsburg College wrestling team will hold its annual spring banquet on Saturday, April 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Christensen Center on the Augsburg campus. The banquet will highlight the accomplishments of the 2011-12 Augsburg wrestling team and also honor the team’s graduating class of 11 seniors.

Under fourth-year head coach Mark Matzek, Augsburg finished the 2011-12 season with a second-place finish at the NCAA Division III national championships with five All-Americans, marking the 24th straight year that the Auggies have finished in the top four in NCAA national competition and the the 24th straight year that Augsburg has earned five or more wrestling All-Americans. Augsburg qualified eight individuals to national tournament competition.

The Auggies finished with a 10-3 dual-meet record and finished second at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals, while winning the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional for the 10th straight season.

Academically, Augsburg earned the highest team grade-point average in the nation in Division III wrestling this season, earning the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III Scholar All-America Team top honors for the second time in program history. In 2011-12, Augsburg had a 3.7341 team GPA in the NWCA’s listing, and five Auggies earned NWCA Division III Scholar All-American honors.
