Gopher Brad Dozeal wins Greco-Roman Title at FLIA Junior Nationals

Storley and Schiller take second place in freestyle

Over the weekend some current Golden Gopher wrestlers took the mat at the 2012 FILA Junior Nationals, in Madison, Wisc. Brad Dolezal (70 kg/154 lbs.), Logan Storley (84 kg/185 lbs.) and Scott Schiller (96 kg/211/5 lbs.) all had strong outings, as they represented the Minnesota Storm. Dolezal took first place in Greco-Roman and second in freestyle. Both Storley and Schiller finished second respectively in the freestyle division.

The event featured the nation’s best 17-20 year old wrestlers in the Olympic styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman. The event showcased many of the nation’s best college underclassmen as well as top high school wrestling talents.

The top six wrestlers who placed, automatically qualify for the 2012 FILA Junior World Team Trials set for Colorado Springs, Colo., May 25-26. This year’s FILA Junior World Championships will be held in Pattaya, Thailand, Sept. 4-9.

Dolezal, who finished this past season with a record of 15-8 in open tournaments for the Golden Gophers scored a 8-3, 6-0 decision in the championship match against Dillon Cowan of the USOEC. Dolezal would also pick up a second place finish in the freestyle division.

Storley, who is coming off an All-American season for the Gophers at 165 pounds earned a second place finish after coming up short against Patrick Downey (Dec 1-0, 0-2, 3-2). Schiller finished with an overall record of 26-4 for the Maroon and Gold, fell to Andrew Campolattano (Dec 1-0, 2-1), who wrestles at Ohio State collegiately in the title match.

Other Gophers who participated over the weekend were Dylan Ness, Brenton Beard, Brandon Bigelbach, Zach Stepan, Alex Daugherty and Jonathon Volp. Future Golden Gophers who will be freshman in the fall that were also representing the Minnesota Storm were Sam Brancale and Michael Kroells.
