St. Cloud State Wrestling Enjoys Strong Showing in Classroom

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State University wrestling recently released its 2012 spring grades for the second semester of the academic year.

“I am very proud of the way our young men have performed in the classroom this semester,” said Brady Wilson, SCSU Head Assistant Wrestling Coach. “Our conversation with our student-athletes is always academics first. We have emphasized to our young men all semester about finishing the academic year strong.”

Of the 40 student-athletes on the Husky wrestling roster, 24 of them finished with a grade point average above a 2.8. Two Huskies received a grade point average of a perfect 4.0.

Receiving grades above a 2.8 for the semester: Mic Berg (Inver Grove Heights, MN), Chris Brassell (Park Ridge, IL), Trent Herold (East Bethal, MN), Jay Hildreth (Council Bluffs, IA), Jacob D. Horn (Ephrata, WA), Jacob R. Horn (St. Michael, MN), Brady Johnshoy (Prior lake, MN), Josh Joriman (Lino Lakes, MN), Jacob Kahnke (Shakopee, MN), Jared Kust (Clintonville, WI), Matt Leibforth (Lemont, IL), Shaun Little (St. Michael, MN), Tyler Mathison (Fremont, NE), Ben McPhail (Pine Island, MN), Tad Merritt (Canby, MN), Cullan Morrissey (Lena, WI), Lucas Munkelwitz (Forest Lake, MN), Matt Nelson (Big Lake, MN), Shamus O’Grady (Coon Rapids, MN), Clint Poster (Pierz, MN), Zach Stewart (Green Bay, WI), Cody Tibbetts (Lake Crystal, MN), Dylan Wright (Inver Grove Heights, MN) and Elliot Zander (Fargo, ND).

SCSU ended its 2011-12 season with a perfect 21-0 overall record, which included a first place finish in the always rugged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, a first place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 tournament and a first place finish at the 2012 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament.

At the 2012 NCAA Division II championships, SCSU finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive season. Derek Skala led the Huskies at the NCAA tournament with a first place finish at 184-pounds, while Merritt gained the tournament’s Most Dominant Wrestler Award.

The Huskies will resume 2012-13 competition at their annual Black/Red Classic which will be held on Friday, November 2 in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m.
