The 2012 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 45 honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers will receive two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Scott West wrestler Michael Kroells. Michael, who was also our top academic wrestler last year, capped his high school career with the Class AA heavyweight state title, a perfect 48-0 record, and a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Not far behind Kroells is senior Brett Pfarr of LeSueur-Henderson and junior Shane Novak of New York Mills.
Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including 13 champions and five runners-up. First team members have an average of just over forty-one season wins, an average season win percentage of 94%, and an average GPA of 3.86.
Fourteen nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Justin Amos of Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Gabe Foltz of Detroit Lakes, Jake Hanson of Rochester Mayo, Adam Jackson of Rosemount, Tyler Jakes of Mankato West, Austin Kluis of Fulda/Murray County Central, Gary Knick of Saint Paul Central, Michael Kroells of Scott West, Charlie Leighton of Trinity at River Ridge, Drey Loge of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, Eric Madson of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Brent Nelson of Mora, Brett Pfarr of LeSueur-Henderson, and Christopher Zimmer of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis.
Michael Kroells was the only wrestler to finish as an undefeated 2012 state champion.

Michael Kroells, 285 lbs.
Scott West, 12th
Michael attends Belle Plaine HS, is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time placewinner. He won the Class AA heavyweight title this year and the 215-pound title as a junior. Michael was runner-up at 189 pounds as a sophomore and he placed sixth at 189 pounds as a freshman. Michael finished his season undefeated with 48 wins. He ended his HS career with a record of 181-28. His GPA is 4.0. Honors include 2012 MWCA Mr. Minnesota Wrestler, MWCA Academic All-State, and 2012 Dream Team Classic team member. Future plans are to wrestle at the Univ. of Minnesota and pursue an engineering degree. Michael’s parents are Lori Kroells, Larry Kroells and Laura Cunningham, and his coaches are Darren Ripley and Jerold Stauffacher.
Brett Pfarr, 182 lbs.
LeSueur-Henderson, 12th
Brett is a three-time state finalist. He won the 182-pound Class A title as a senior. Brett was runner-up at 152 pounds as a junior and at 140 pounds as a sophomore. He also placed sixth at 119 pounds as a freshman. Brett had an impressive senior season record of 42-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 191-33. Brett’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-time NHSCA Nationals All-American, cadet freestyle nationals third place, 2011 Guillotine Academic All-State, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, active in 4-H and church. Brett is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Brett’s parents are David and Robyn and his coach is Scott Wilson.
Shane Novak, 113 lbs.

Shane is a four-time state entrant winning the 113-pound Class A title this year. He placed second at 112 pounds as a sophomore and fifth at 103 pounds as an eighth-grader. Shane had an impressive season record of 42-1. His current career record is 152-27. Shane’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include two-time team Most Outstanding Wrestler, four-time Park Region Conference champion, 15 tournament championships. Shane is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at a four-year college and study pre-med. Shane’s parents are Blaine and Lisa and his coach is Eric Niemi.

Josh is a three-time state entrant winning the 220-pound Class A title this year. He placed third at heavyweight as a junior. Josh had an impressive season record of 44-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 151-35. Josh’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include 2012 Class A All-Tournament Team, 2011 Guillotine Academic All-State, MWCA Academic All-State, three-time all-conference, two-time academic all-conference, team captain, and All-State Football Honorable Mention. Future plans are to attend college and get a degree in Electrical Engineering. Josh’s parents are Mark and Cathy and his coach is Joel Skillings.

Chase is a three-time state entrant winning the 182-pound Class AAA title this year. He placed fourth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Chase had a season record of 41-4. His current career record is 123-29. Chase’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include being a three-time academic letterwinner, Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader, 1,000-pound bent bar club member, two-time team MVP, and section champions in football. Future plans are to wrestle and play football in college and pursue an Exercise Science degree. Chase’s parents are Paul and Jean and his coach is Skip Toops.

Adam won the Class A title this year at 145 pounds. He is a four-time state entrant placing fourth at 140 pounds as a sophomore. Adam had an impressive season record of 41-2. His current career record is 157-40. Adam’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include 2012 MWCA Academic All-State, two-time team captain, 2012 Mental Aerobics Champion, KNUJ Radio Player of the Week, Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, and 2012 Asics Nationals fourth place. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle and/or play football in college and pursue a career in law enforcement. Nick is a two-time state champion and a three-time finalist. He won the 152-pound Class AA title this year and the 145-pound title as a sophomore. Nick also placed second at 145 pounds as a freshman. Nick had a season record of 45-4. His current career record is 174-30. Nick’s GPA is 3.85. Honors and achievements include two-time USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Champion, 2012 MWCA Academic All-State, Minnesota Christmas Tournament runner-up and Cheesehead Tournament runner-up. Kyle is a two-time state champion and a three-time finalist. He won the 113-pound Class AA title this year and the 103-pound title as a sophomore. Kyle also placed second at 103 pounds as a freshman. Kyle had an impressive season record of 31-2. His current career record is 122-13 (90.4 win %). Kyle’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion and runner-up, two-time cadet freestyle All-American, 2012 MWCA Academic All-State, and a member of Letterperson’s Club. Kyle is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at a Division I school and pursue a pre-med or engineering degree. Curt is a three-time state champion and a four-time finalist. He won the 152-pound Class A title this year, the 145-pound title as a junior, and the 135-pound title as a sophomore. Curt was also runner-up at 125 pounds as a freshman. Curt had an impressive season record of 43-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 192-24. Curt’s GPA is 3.8. Honors and achievements include 2012 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Champion, 2011 NHSCA Nationals All-American, 2010 NHSCA Nationals runner-up, 2012 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, and team captain.Future plans are to wrestle at the Univ. of Northern Iowa. Jacob Anderson, 138 lbs.

Jacob won the Class A title this year at 138 pounds. He is a four-time state entrant placing sixth at 135 pounds as a junior. Jacob had an impressive season record of 37-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 161-44. Jacob’s GPA is 3.85. Honors and achievements include being a two-year captain, four-year all-conference, KNUJ Wrestler of the Year, and New Ulm Journal Wrestler of the Year. Jacob is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Augustana. Jacob’s parents are Lynn and Nancy and his coach is Todd Bertram.

Adam is a four-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class A 195-pound runner-up this year. Adam had an impressive season record of 45-2. He ended his HS career with a record of 158-44. Adam’s GPA is 3.97. Honors and achievements include cadet freestyle nationals runner-up, Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, 2009 football state champion, all-conference in football and baseball, senior class president, and active in 4-H and church. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to play football at St. Cloud State and double majoring in biology and chemistry in the pre-veterinary program. Adam is a two-time state finalist. He was the Class AAA 152-pound runner-up this year as a senior and last year as a junior. Adam had a season record of 41-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 114-21. Adam’s GPA is 4.0 (ranked #1 out of 548). Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, four-year letter winner, two-time team MVP, 2011 Guillotine Academic All-State, Student Council member three years, Spanish Honor Society, and four-year academic letter winner. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the US. Air Force Academy and pursue an engineering or medical degree. Adam’s parents are Joel and Nicki and his coach is Brett Larson.

Christopher is a two-time state entrant placing third at 195 pounds this year in Class A. Christopher had an impressive season record of 39-1. His current career record is 101-56. Christopher’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include wrestling and football team captain, all-conference in wrestling and football, and 2011 Section 8AA Academic All-Star. Christopher is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four year college and play sports. Christopher’s parents are David and Brenda and his coach is Colby Marich.

Lincoln is a two-time state entrant placing third at 138 pounds this year in Class AAA. Lincoln had a season record of 42-6. His current career record is 99-37. Lincoln’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include two-time Mississippi 8 All-Conference Academic Team, 2011 cadet freestyle state champion, 2011 folkstyle All-American. Lincoln is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle Division I in college. Lincoln’s parents are Tony and Kelly and his coach is Dan Lefebvre.

Chase is a three-time state entrant placing third at 132 pounds this year in Class AA. Chase had a season record of 44-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 153-30. Chase’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include five-time all-conference in wrestling and 2011 all-state runner in the 800 M. Chase is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Concordia in Moorhead and continue to wrestle. Chase’s parents are Jon and Sherri and his coach is Jair Toedter.

Brandon won four state titles in four tries. He won the 160-pound Class AAA title this year, the 140-pound title as a junior, the 135-pound title as a sophomore, and the 125-pound title as a freshman. Brandon had an impressive season record of 48-1. He ended his HS career with a record of 218-7 (96.9 win %). Brandon’s GPA is 3.57. Honors include four-time section all-academic, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, three-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, two-time Clash All-Tournament team, 24-0 at The Clash over four years, 29-0 at team and individual state tournament, and 169 career pins. Future plans are to wrestle at the Univ. of Minnesota. Brandon’s parents are Roger and Sheila and his coach was Jim Jackson.

Tanner is a two-time state entrant placing third at 182 pounds this year in Class AA. Tanner had a season record of 42-7. He ended his high school career with a record of 110-44. Tanner’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference in wrestling and all-conference in baseball and football in 2011. Tanner is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Concordia College in Moorhead and play football. Tanner’s parents are Neil and Sherry and his coach is Jair Toedter.

Mitchel is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time placewinner. He won the 120-pound Class A title this year and the 119-pound title as a junior. Mitchel also placed second at 112 pounds as a sophomore and sixth at 103 pounds as a freshman. Mitchel had an impressive season record of 46-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 212-23 (90.2 win %). Mitchel’s GPA is 3.56. Honors include five-time all-conference, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2011 Guillotine Academic All-State, and Kenyon-Wanamingo career leader in wins (212) and pins (132). Future plans are to continue wrestling at Wisconsin-La Crosse. Mitchel’s parents are Wayne and Donna and his coach is Matt Ryan.

Sam is a five-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 160-pound runner-up this year. He placed fifth at 160 pounds as a junior and fourth at 119 pounds as an eighth-grader. Sam had an impressive season record of 44-2. He ended his HS career with a record of 202-35. Sam’s GPA is 3.76. Honors include three-year wrestling captain, MWCA Academic All-State, student council, honorable mention all-state football, two-year football captain and baseball captain, and homecoming king. Sam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Southwest Minnesota State for Ag-Business and play baseball. Tristan is a two-time state entrant placing third at 113 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed third at 103 pounds as a sophomore. Tristan had a season record of 34-3. His current career record is 91-7 (92.9 win %). Tristan’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include 2011 cadet Greco-Roman national runner-up, FloNationals fifth place, and he is a member of Minnesota’s Junior Dual Team. Future plans are to wrestle in college and study aerospace engineering. Tristan’s parents are Tom and Denise and his coach is Lyle Freudenberg.

Oakley is a two-time state champion and a three-time placewinner. He won the 126-pound Class A title this year and the 125-pound title as a junior. Oakley also placed fourth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Oakley had a season record of 42-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 177-23. Oakley’s GPA is 3.55. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, and 2011 Guillotine Academic All-State. Future plans are to attend college and play baseball. Mitch was the Class AAA 160-pound runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Mitch had a season record of 39-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 158-50. Mitch’s GPA is 3.69. Honors and achievements include two-year captain, 2012 Mental Aerobics Tournament champion, 2012 Bi-State Tournament champion, three-time member of the MWCA Academic State Champion team, and Eastview’s all-time winningest wrestler (158 wins), takedowns leader (499), season wins (39), and season takedowns (221). Future plans are to attend college and continue wrestling. Mitch’s parents are Jon and Carol and his coach is Kurt Habeck.

Stephen is a two-time finalist and a four-time placer in four state tournament appearances. He placed third at 160 pounds this year as a senior. He was the 160-pound runner-up as a junior and sophomore. He also placed sixth at 152 pounds as a freshman. Stephen had a season record of 33-3. He ended his HS career with a record of 177-28. Stephen’s GPA is 3.84. Honors include a school record 177 career wins, over 4,000 career rushing yards and 40 touchdowns in football, and student council president. Stephen is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to play football at Northern State and major in Physical Therapy and minor in coaching. Stephen’s parents are Eric and Patti and his coach is Pat Vold.

Matt is a two-time state entrant placing fourth at 138 pounds this year in Class A. Matt had a season record of 43-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 155-40. Matt’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include 2012 team captain, all-conference, three sport letter winner (football, wrestling, and track), and Perfect Attendance Award (6 years) for wrestling. Matt is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Central Lakes College in Brainerd for Landscaping. Matt’s parents are Greg and Patti and his coach was Dan Rouser.

Mitchell is a three-time state entrant placing third at 152 pounds this year in Class A. Mitchell had a season record of 40-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 160-39. Mitchell’s GPA is 3.75. Honors and achievements include all-conference in football. Mitchell is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State University. Patrick placed third at state this year at 170 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Patrick had an impressive season record of 39-2. His current career record is 108-66. Patrick’s GPA is 3.76. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference, tournament champion at BBE, Maple Grove, Paynesville, and New London-Spicer. Patrick’s parents are Paul and Christine and his coach is Rich Vos.

Tyler is a two-time state entrant placing fifth at 182 pounds this year in Class AA. Tyler had a season record of 43-3. His current career record is 137-57. Tyler’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include NHSCA Sophomore All-American, two-year captain, three-time all-conference, MWCA Academic All-State, 75 career falls, and voted team Most Valuable Wrestler. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and wrestle. Tyler’s parents are Paul and Lori and his coach is Dustin Buttell.

Gregory is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 182 pounds this year in Class A. Gregory had a season record of 39-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 120-51. Gregory’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include three-year team captain, all-conference in football, five-year track runner, National Merit Scholar national finalist, Knowledge Bowl team, Speech team, and three-time all-conference mathlete. Gregory is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to pursue a degree in engineering or physics and play football in college – narrowed to Carleton or Macalester. Brent placed fifth at state this year at 145 pounds in Class AA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Brent had a season record of 42-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 113-33. Brent’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include team captain, two-time all-conference in wrestling, all-conference and all-state in cross country and track Brent is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Bethel and continue running. Brent’s parents are Janelle and David and his coach is Tom Youngblom.
