Wrestling USA Magazine has ranked St. Cloud State University’s 2012-13 recruit class as the sixth best among the nation’s non-Division I recruiting classes. SCSU ranked first in the poll among Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools, as Augustana was ranked 11th in the poll.
“To receive this type of recognition is always an honor for our program,” SCSU coach Steve Costanzo said.
Newcomers to the SCSU program in 2012-13 include Daniel Polanco (125), Tyler Pasvogel (133), Chevy Goble (141), Kaden Spurgeon (149), Mike Jarnot (149), Jorge Barajas (157), Jordan Chouanard (157), Gabe Fogarty (165), Blake Meling (165), Taylor Lewandowski (174), Damien Luchterhand (174), Clayton Jennissen (184), Uthman Rabiu (197), Luke Belich (197), Austin Goergen (285) and Gabe Tudor (285).
The Huskies ended the 2011-12 season with a perfect 21-0 dual record (7-0 NSIC). The Huskies won the 2012 NSIC championship, the 2012 NWCA Division II National Duals Championship and also claimed top honors at the 2012 NCAA DIvision II Super Region 3. At the 2012 NCAA Division II championships, the Huskies earned runner-up honors for the second consecutive season.
A total of six SCSU wrestlers brought home All-America honors in 2012. Senior Derek Skala led the way with a first place finish in the 184-pound bracket at the 2012 NCAA Division II championships.
SCSU Coach Steve Costanzo will begin his seventh season with the Huskies in 2012-13. The Huskies will return four All-Americans from last year’s squad including seniors Jake Kahnke (285), Shamus O’Grady (184), Jacob D. Horn (157) and Andy Pokorny (133).
SCSU will kick-off the 2012-13 season on Nov. 2 with the annual Red-Black intra-squad match in Halenbeck Hall. On Nov. 10, the Huskies will hit the road to Ames, Iowa for the annual Nichols Open at Iowa State. SCSU fans will want to mark Dec. 8 on their calendars as SCSU will host the annual Husky Open in Halenbeck Hall that day.
