Huskies Earn #5 DII Ranking in DII Preseason Poll

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team, which has finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Division II championships in 2011 and 2012, received a fifth place ranking in the 2012-13 Basford Division II National Ranking.

Central Oklahoma led the list with 55 points, while Newberry ranked second at 42 and defending national champion Nebraska-Kearney had 41 points. Findlay placed fourth with 40 points while the Huskies gained 38 points int he poll. SCSU was the top ranked team in the poll from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

In the poll’s individual rankings, SCSU senior Andy Pokorny was ranked second at 133 pounds, while senior Jacob D. Horn was ranked seventh at 157-pounds.

Senior Shamus O’Grady ranked third at 184-pounds, while senior Jacob Kahnke was ranked second at 285-pounds.

In the Basford Super Region 3 preseason poll, the Huskies earned a number one ranking.

The Basford rankings, complied by Chris Basford, were officially adopted by the NCAA Division II Coaches Association in the spring of 2012, and are based on the NCAA Division II National Tournament points projections.

The St. Cloud State Wrestling team returns four NCAA All-Americans and five NCAA National Qualifiers from last year’s Runner-Up team. The Huskies will open up their season on Friday, November 2, as they host their Annual Black/Red Classic at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
