Southwest Minnesota State 21, Concordia 16

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened its 2012-13 dual season on Friday night with a 21-16 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Friday night in Moorhead.

Concordia, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III, drops to 1-1 in dual matches.

SMSU MustangsSMSU won six of 10 matches on the night, including the first three bouts to build a 10-0 lead.

Travis Borchert opened the night for SMSU at 125 with a 6-2 decision to give SMSU a 3-0 lead. Justin Reinsma followed with a major dec. at 133 to give SMSU a 7-0 lead. Ethan Hildebrandt capped the strong start with an 8-5 victory at 141 to push the SMSU lead to 10-0.

Concordia won the next three matches, including one by fall, to take a 12-10 lead following the 165-pound match.

Blaine Miller put SMSU back on top with a 5-2 victory at 174, beginning a string of three straight SMSU victories. Travis Peralta pushed the SMSU lead to 16-12 with a 9-4 win at 184, before Micah Larson clinched the Mustang victory with a tech. fall at 197, winning by a 19-4 score and giving SMSU a 21-12 advantage.

SMSU continues action on Saturday competing at the MSU Moorhead Open.
