MSUM Wrestlers Have Strong Day at Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Redshirt freshman Jesse Puncochar finished second in the White Division at 174 pounds to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the eighth annual Dragon Open Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

MSU-Moorhead DragonsPuncochar won his first match, pinning Jesse Brusch in just 11 seconds. He followed with a 7-2 win over Logan Henning of Augustana, who was wrestling unattached. He added a 5-1 win over Trey Griffin over St. Cloud State to advance to the finals, where he lost 6-2.

Several other Dragons placed in their divisions.

In the 125-pound White Division, freshman Mitch Dunlap took third. After receiving a bye, he pinned Connor McLaughlin of Regina in 58 seconds before losing to Jamestown’s Joey Murillo, 4-2 in the semis. He came back for a 3-1 win over Josh Farr of Rochester Community College in the third-place match.

Senior Jacob Bennett took fifth in the Red Division 157. He lost his first match to Shawn Hatlestad of Augustana but pinned Caleb Meide of North Dakota State in his next match. He then edged Shane Fessenmaier of Ridgewater, 2-1, and then won the fifth-place match by a medical forfeit.

In the Red Division at 141 pounds, junior Angel Vega was fifth. He lost his first match but came back with a 9-5 win over Brandon Bigelbach in the consolation bracket. he followed with a 6-4 win over Augsburg’s Rashad Kennedy and then edged Eric Ellingston, 6-4 in overtime, to claim fifth.

in the Red Division at 149 pounds, Casey Williams placed fifth. He lost his first match but came back with a 10-0 win over Jamestown’s Sam Brown and followed that with a 3-2 win over Chevy Goble over St. Cloud State to place fifth.

Sophomore Gerad Fugleberg was sixth at 285 pounds. He lost his first match but came back with pin of Dustin Caspers of Northern at 2:32. He then won by a medical forfeit and then pinned Cody Kasprick of Concordia to advance to the fifth-place match, where he fell by fall.

Phillipe Walker finished 1-2 in the Red Division at 133 pounds. His win came over Yonas Gebreab of Concordia.

Next action for the Dragons is Dec. 11 at home against Augsburg.
