Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action with a 26-13 win over U-Mary Friday night. Highlighting MSU’s win was 157-lbs Sawyer Hoffman as the redshirt-freshman defeated Collin Engelhardt 3-2 in double-overtime. Hoffman gained a late riding-time advantage point in the extra session for the win.
Junior David Demo (125 lbs) opened the dual with a dominating 15-0 technical fall win over Jordan Eckholm. Freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs) moved MSU’s advantage to 9-0 with a 15-2 major decision win over Hunter Menendez.
MSU would lose back-to-batch matches as 149-lbs and 157-lbs before Hoffman’s double-overtime win.
Sophomore Cody Quinn (165 lbs) and junior Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) recorded back-to-back major decision wins by scores of 10-0 and 19-5 respectively for MSU.
After losing an overtime decision at 184-lbs, senior Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) defeated Kriss McCleary 2-0 before junior Corby Running (285-lbs) won the heavyweight bout 14-6 for the major decision win.
MSU will host Minot State tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
