#1 St. Cloud State Continues Winning Ways
Canby, Minn. – The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team completed a weekend sweep by earning a 25-13 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Canby, Minn.
The victory moved SCSU’s record to 16-0, 4-0 NSIC in 2012-13 and it also helped the Huskies keep alive their 43-match consecutive dual match win streak – the longest in team history.
In a match wrestled at Canby H.S. in Canby, Minn., the Huskies set the tempo with a 13-1 major decision win by #7 Eric Forde of SCSU over SMSU’s Ed Reno.
At 133-pounds, SMSU’s Justin Reinsma scored a 6-4 win over SCSU’s Eric Ellington before the Huskies charged back with a critical 10-2 major decision at 141-pounds by Matt Nelson over SMSU’s Ethan Hildebrandt.
SCSU padded its lead with a pin by Josh Howk at 149 over SMSU’s Beau Buysse at the 2:05 mark. SCSU also gained extra points at 157-pounds with an 11-2 major decision by #8 Clint Poster over SMSU’s Codie Lane.
SMSU got back into the match with wins at 165-pounds and 174-pounds before #2 Shamus O’Grady righted the ship with a major decision victory over SMSU’s Travis Peralta. SMSU added a win at 197, before Caleb White completed the night with a 4-2 OT win over SMSU’s John Gorter at 285.
SCSU will return home on Feb. 1 for a 7 p.m. home match in Halenbeck Hall against U-Mary. Tickets for this NSIC match are available at the gate. All SCSU students with a valid SCSU student ID card are admitted FREE to all regular season home matches…just show your ID card at the gate and you get in FREE.
The Mustangs will split the upcoming weekend with a home match versus Upper Iowa on Friday, Feb. 1 and an away match versus Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday, Feb. 2.
