YellowJackets Win Top NJCAA Academic Award
The Rochester Community and Technical College competed in the NJCAA National Tournament this past weekend in Des Moines, IA. The team placed third among Non-Scholarship programs, and 11th overall. Garret Miller (Plainview, MN) and Joe Bunne (Grand Meadow, MN) each walked away from Des Moines with All-American status. Miller placed third at 174 pounds, while Bunne placed fourth at 197.
Miller went into the tournament unranked at 174, and throughout the two days went 5-1, beating three top-five ranked wrestlers. “Garret wrestled extremely well, and we always knew he had the ability to finish in the top three at this tournament,” noted Coach Randy Rager. “In the two weeks leading up to the tournament, we focused on a couple of things that needed to be changed on his feet. He responded well and is an All-American.”
Bunne went into the tournament ranked 11th by the NJCAA. After a first round loss, he won five straight matches all by fall. “Joe scored some huge points for the team. He was great to have around this year not only for his teammates, but also for the coaching staff,” said Coach Rager.
RCTC also won the Academic Award for having the highest team GPA among any NJCAA wrestling program. Coach Rager had this to say about the program, “We have always stressed academics and doing well in the classroom. Our average team GPA this season is a 3.24, and this award shows that the guys have been working hard not only on the mat, but also in the classroom. There’s three things we stress in our program: Become a better person, Become a better student, and Become a better wrestler. This team has surpassed my expectations in all ways and it has been an honor working with them.”
