Mavericks Defeat Mustangs 25-9; Remain Perfect in NSIC

Mankato, Minn. – No. 10 Minnesota State (9-2, 6-0) had three wrestlers record bonus points in a 25-9 victory over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday Night at Taylor Center. Junior David Demo set the tone early with a 15-0 tech fall in the 125-lbs bout.

MSU-Mankato MavericksSenior Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) and junior Corby Running (285 lbs) each recorded major decision wins to close out the dual for MSU. Haynes defeated Micah Larson 12-0 while Running triumphed over Todd Klemz 15-2.

In between the bonus points for MSU, freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs) defeated No. 5 Justin Reinsma 3-2. Sophomore Drew Lexvold and freshman Thomas Allen recorded back-to-back wins at 141-lbs and 149-lbs to give MSU a 14-0 lead heading into the 157-lbs bout.

Freshman Sawyer Hoffman (157 lbs) lost a hard-fought 4-3 decision before No. 3 Cody Quinn dropped an 8-3 decision.

Junior Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) gave MSU a 17-6 lead after defeating Kyle Begin 6-5. This was only Begin’s second loss of the year.

Scott VanDeLoo lost 8-2 at 184-lbs before Haynes and Running’s back-to-back major decisions.

MSU won’t return to the mat until Feb. 14, as the Mavericks travel to St. Cloud, Minn. for a showdown with No. 1 St. Cloud State. The Huskies are currently 5-0 in the NSIC.

SMSU will look to rebound from the weekend sweep with road duals versus the University of Mary on Friday, Feb. 7, and Minot State on Saturday, Feb. 8. Both duals are slated for 7 p.m. start times.
